Hbolt rider Posted January 24, 2018 #1 Posted January 24, 2018 (edited) Do you California owners have a California emissions sticker on your bike. I bought a 84’ out of state and dmv says it needs a California emissions compliant sticker. The only stickers I see is a federal safety standards sticker and a federal noise emissions sticker. I hope this doesn’t turn into a big headache. Edited January 24, 2018 by Hbolt rider
baylensman Posted January 24, 2018 #2 Posted January 24, 2018 I believe you are referring to the C.A.R.B. sticker. I' don't know if that was in effect in 84 or not. Perhaps someone else knows for sure. Remember all state workers are not neccessarily up to date on when and where. But i found this online He gave me the number of the Air Resources Board, which is 1-800-242-4450 and moved on to the next verification. Wow. So I pull out of the verification line, called up the ARB (not sure why they dropped the "C"), and surprisingly they answered the phone on the first ring, real person, and pretty nice. She kind of said the same thing ... if no CA emissions label then the motorcycle needs to have over 7500 and meet Federal emissions. She wasn't so sure about if all 49 state bikes had the Federal label or not.
Condor Posted January 24, 2018 #3 Posted January 24, 2018 Yeah, it's located on the inside of one of the side covers. Can't remember which side?? It generally falls off from heat and oil residue over the years. When I brought my '93 back from AZ with Vermont plates and registered it, the tech asked about the label and I didn't have a clue about what he was talking about. He just figured it was somewhere and checked it off the list... I finally ran into one while wrenching on the '87.... It basically sez that the bike met all the emissions for that model year...

baylensman Posted January 24, 2018 #5 Posted January 24, 2018 have over 7500 what? 7500 miles and i believe that pre 86 there was no emission sticker on motorcycles

Hbolt rider Posted January 24, 2018 Author #7 Posted January 24, 2018 (edited) Have over 7500 what? I think the 7500 mile thing is for people that move here. If your bike isn’t California legal it needs to have 7500 miles on it to be able to register it here. Unfortunately California citizens don’t have that luxury when it comes to bringing in out of state bikes. Edited January 24, 2018 by Hbolt rider

djh3 Posted January 25, 2018 #10 Posted January 25, 2018 This is what I found. Does my vehicle qualify for a smog exemption?Smog inspections are required unless your vehicle is: Gasoline powered 1975 year model or older Diesel powered 1997 year model and older or with a Gross Vehicle Weight rating (GVWR) of more than 14,000 lbs Electric Natural gas powered with a GVWR rating of more than 14,000 lbs. Motorcycle So from what I see your in the clear. CA DMV site Look second section down.

Thats correct I do not need to get a smog check but my understanding is it still needs that sticker that says at the time of manufacture it met California requirement.

I found the emissions sticker on the left cover. It says it conforms to US epa but nothing about California.
Hbolt rider Posted January 25, 2018 Author #13 Posted January 25, 2018 Is there no one in California with a first gen that can confirm or deny they have California emissions sticker.
djh3 Posted January 26, 2018 #14 Posted January 26, 2018 Hmm this sounds a stupid as a screen door in a submarine. What keeps someone from just getting a side cover with the sticker for that year and presenting it. Holy crap the bike qualifies for antique tags for crips sake. Hell Id got get a PO box at the first town over the boarder and register it there. Heck send me the money to register it and paperwork and I'll let you use my address here in Fla.

I'd go this route because I'm sure riding a motorcycle in California or with California tags could cause cancer. I bet it's even in the owners manual.

I need a picture of one so I can print it out and slap it on there. Thanks for the offer but I’m going to just roll with it and hope for the best. I’ll try to convince them that 86’ is when they started putting the Cali compliant stickers on there.
Flyinfool Posted January 26, 2018 #17 Posted January 26, 2018 I just had a thought, (those who know me know just how dangerous that can be....). I believe that my 88 is a Cali bike because it has all of the extra pollution crap on it. I will try to remember to check my side covers to see if their might be a CA emissions sticker in there. If there is, we will at least know what it is supposed to look like. I know that there are some kind of stickers in there, I just never paid close attention to them before. Now I just have to get over my CRS and remember to do it..................
SpencerPJ Posted January 26, 2018 #18 Posted January 26, 2018 I have this sticker under my left plastic. It will not peel off or I'd send it to you

Mine only says it meets US epa. Unfortunately that’s for a 83’ I need one for a 84’ but I could probably get by that with a little scratch over the three. If you Heat it up with a heat gun it should soften up the adhesive and peel off. I could send it back to you after I get it registered.

It is a super thin rubbery type sticker, 35 years old, that has been tucked towards the engine it's whole life. Brittle is an understatement. I took the heat gun to it, only made it more prone to tear, and it got my plastic / paint hotter than I want to do again. Sorry. Maybe someone with a parts bike could sell / rent / give you their whole side plastic. Another idea, plenty of online or even, create your own sticker ideas. Who's to know that a particular sticker is what Yama supplied. Also, reading other peoples issues on Google, much of the time they don't ask, you just happened upon a time they did. Maybe consider a different DMV branch, play your dumb card. Nothing to lose.
Kretz Posted January 26, 2018 #22 Posted January 26, 2018 Really? How crazy can the system get. (I guess it is California though). They want a sticker that says it complied with emissions regs in 1984??? 34 YEARS AGO!!! FFS, Of course everything on the bike will still be in pristine, new condition so all those settings will still be the same as they were in 1984! What a crock. I despair at the stupidity of gov't sometimes (well, most of the time actually!) Could someone loan you the requisite side cover with sticker & you return it to them once registration is complete.
SpencerPJ Posted January 26, 2018 #23 Posted January 26, 2018 Doing a little more digging, seems Cali started getting nasty in 84, maybe that's why my 83 has it and your 84 does not. Many Many people have same complaints. Most find going to a different DMV the solution, oh ya, be nice to the people, at least until you get your tags.
