ken5124 Posted January 5, 2018 #1 Posted January 5, 2018 Hi, Looking to confirm that the following starter will work on my 86 Venture. https://www.ebay.com/itm/-/132219977857? Thanks Ken
Marcarl Posted January 6, 2018 #2 Posted January 6, 2018 That should be a 4 brush starter. Looks right to me and if what he says is true, then that works. 83 to 13, all should fit.
mraf Posted January 6, 2018 #3 Posted January 6, 2018 I myself have a 86 but have done the cable upgrades and a AGM battery is all. I still have a slow start when hot but never failed to start. So a positive is not from me but maybe this http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?80669-Replacement-starter Discussion will help you in your decision. I do not see where it ever says that it is a 4 brush starter or not. Maybe a call to them first to quiz them if has the 4 brushes in stead of just 2 brushes. Someone else might chime in with a yes it will work and is what your looking for.
van avery Posted January 6, 2018 #4 Posted January 6, 2018 I put a 4 brush starter in my 87 and it made all the difference. Went from slow starts to fast turning aon that bike nd quick starts. Didn't do the wire upgrade on that bike. Don't forget to clean the ground connection to the block on the right front corner of the engine while you working on things. Good luck
ken5124 Posted January 6, 2018 Author #5 Posted January 6, 2018 Thanks.. Plan to order it and will dismantle enough to verify it is a 4 brush.
Marcarl Posted January 6, 2018 #6 Posted January 6, 2018 Thanks.. Plan to order it and will dismantle enough to verify it is a 4 brush. If I remember correctly there is an indicator on the outside that would tell the difference, can't remember what that was though.
mraf Posted January 8, 2018 #7 Posted January 8, 2018 Thanks.. Plan to order it and will dismantle enough to verify it is a 4 brush. I would be interested to know what you find out. Marcarl is thinking:think: about the indicator so hard its beginning to warm up over here some.
cimmer Posted January 8, 2018 #8 Posted January 8, 2018 If I recall correctly, the 2 brush starter has a big Phillips type head on the side of the body. The 4 brush does not have this phillips head on the body of the starter. Hope that helps. Rick F.
