camos Posted December 15, 2017 #1 Posted December 15, 2017 The choke cable on my 89 has been sticking for a while so today I disassembled it at the handlebar to oil it and noticed one of the wire strands had come away from the end piece. So, I decided to order a replacement and was very surprised to find part 26H-26331-00-00 is mostly unavailable. Tried Boats.net, Part Shark and a few other places that normally have parts for these old VR's. I did finally find a Yamaha one on eBay.ca for US$27.00 in Norway of all places but with free shipping worldwide. There might be some available locally, somewhere in North America, for less but I never found it. Anyway, thought I would mention they now seem to be as rare as hen's teeth so if your VR's choke cable is on the iffy side it might be a good idea to source a new one out.
cowpuc Posted December 16, 2017 #2 Posted December 16, 2017 Cammy I dont know if a choke cable off an 83 will work on your scoot but I have an extra one I would be more than happy to send your way if it would help out? Anyone else reading this,,,, I found that by keeping the cables on my scoots lubed by using a cable luber and injecting synthetic bicycle chain lube into the cables, my broken cables became pretty much a thing of the past (nothings perfect).. I have used these for years: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mr-Luber-Cable-Lubing-Lube-Tool-For-Lubricating-Clutch-Brake-Throttle-Cables/171873433886?hash=item280474791e:g:9C8AAOSwqu9VJYPU&vxp=mtr and, though it can be a little messy = IMHO, a little dust gathered on the cable ends (that chain lube is some sticky stuff) is better than trying to get home by pulling on a broken throttle cable with a pair of pliers
camos Posted December 17, 2017 Author #3 Posted December 17, 2017 Thanks for your kind offer Puck but I've already ordered one from the other side of the world so you can keep it available for anyone else who might be in more desperate need. When I was searching for the cables that no had left were being offered for about $17 so I know I likely spent more than necessary but other than gas, brake pads and oil, my 89 VR has not cost me anything in the past 3 years so that $27 does not seem so bad. It's just a plain pull cable of a certain length so they are very likely available from some other application for much less. Perhaps if you or anyone else has the choke cable off the bike, it might be very useful to get a measurement of the overall length and the size of the end buttons. That cable oiler looks like a good solution for quickly lubing a cable. I did it the KISS way by applying a few drops of 30 wt oil then letting it dribble down before adding a few more drops and then a few more drops... While that was happening I spent time in the yard vacuuming up a bunch leaves so it all worked out pretty well.
