JOE MCDERMOTT Posted April 24, 2008 #1 Posted April 24, 2008 I have a 1996 Royal Star and will not shift into higher gears.. 1st ,2nd and 3rd are good.. I looked at slave cylinder and working fine. I tried playing with linkage some and Know luck.. Anyone have any thoughts..Thanks Joe
SaltyDawg Posted April 24, 2008 #2 Posted April 24, 2008 I had difficulty shifting my 99 RSV to the point of it wouldn't shift at all once and found the pivot bolt that holds the HT shifter on was almost completely out. Tightened it and have not had any trouble since. Others have said that their linkage not being lubed properly made shifting hard and sometimes prevented it from going in gear. Not sure if that helps or not. Good Luck
Dusk Posted April 24, 2008 #3 Posted April 24, 2008 This sounds like the 1st gen star washer problem. I never heard of 2nd gens having this issue though.
hipshot Posted April 24, 2008 #5 Posted April 24, 2008 96 is still the first gen aint it??? no such animal, as a '96, venture. no production between 94 and 98. check your vin # and you should be able to tell what year you really have. just jt
skidrow Posted April 24, 2008 #6 Posted April 24, 2008 I Had A 96 Four Years Ago. It Did Almost The Same Thing. No First Or 5th. The Star Washer Sounds Like Your Problem Too. In Fact It Was Four Years Ago To The Month. DON'T try to force it into gear. The shift fork is VERY soft alluminum and will bend way out of shape.

Freebird Posted April 25, 2008 #8 Posted April 25, 2008 Folks...it appears that the write-up on the Star Washer problem got deleted at some point. Does anybody have a copy of it or willing to write it up again?
WestwardBeast Posted May 7, 2023 #9 Posted May 7, 2023 Freebird, anyone write up the steps to this that you know of? thanks
