Just made a deal with the local Yamaha dealer who has an 84' standard, its complete, not sure if it runs, ill definately try to get it running if possible but wont be heartbroken if it doesnt. My intentions for the bike is to tear it down and restore all the parts that are rebuildable and use them as spares for my 83' the plastic looks good and many pieces are better that whats currently on my bike. Ill keep all the plastic and make necessary repairs and possibly keep them for a repaint sometime down the road. I know most body, frame, engine components are interchangeable but i think i read at some point that the 83 was one year only for some of the ignition parts? Or the cdi? Could someone shed some light on what i WONT be able to use from the 84 please

The TCI is definatly different, the wiring diagrams I have seen of the 83 certain mods of them were different and I guess upgraded somewhere along the lines. I believe more then likely carbs may be different easiest way to tell is if the vacuum port on number 2 carb bottom is there which goes to the vacuum advance on the 83's

The engine side covers attach different on the '83, but some were converted. The covers themselves are the same.

Yes, due to the different vacuum porting, the TCI's for the '83 has a vacuum advance that is 180 degrees out of phase with the other years.

The instrument cluster is different for the '83.

There are a couple of very minor differences in the wiring harness and wiring of the '83.

I just got it home thismorning. The paint is not original but Looks to have been well done many years ago. It has no battery in it but i hooked my charger up to the battery terminals to see if it would light up and everything seems to light up as it should. Even the dash doesn’t have any errors. I think the gear indicator is kinda cool and think it would be neat to make it work on my 83. This bike not able to be registered for the road so i have no intention to make it road worthy but would still like to get it running just so i can run cleaners through the carbs and such and check the charging system because i would like to know that all the spare parts are working as they should
