RDawson Posted September 25, 2017 #1 Posted September 25, 2017 07 RSV. I installed the Edset mic splitter with the Garmin to get my phone working correctly. I then plugged a Bluetooth receiver into the other input to stream Pandora. Either will work fine alone but when the garmin and receiver are both on I get terrible engine noise. Are the two inputs battling each other? Will a ground loop isolator fix this or can I only use one at a time? I've searched threads for hours and am still lost. I've ordered the MPOW filter in hope. We're leaving for Daytona next week and would love to get this right. Wired IMC headsets, factory sound system other than these add ons. Electronics are not my specialty. Thanks, Ronnie.
bongobobny Posted September 25, 2017 #2 Posted September 25, 2017 I am not positive on this, so you will have to look at the cable ends, but perhaps the audio output for your Garmin is monophonic (1 audio channel) and the Yamaha IS (as in yes, it is) stereo (2 channel). If you are plugging a mono cable into a stereo jack, it will put a ground where there is not supposed to be one. Also, if you are plugging in a stereo cable into a mono jack (the output of the Garmin if it's output is mono) that too might put a ground where it isn't supposed to! Try unplugging the cable that is connected into the Garmin and see if the noise goes away. Sometimes, even just the routing of an audio cable can cause ignition noise to get in even if the cabling is correct. One would think that if there was a bad cable, the noise would be there all the time...

They are paired through a y splitter input. Would a wrong cable end act like that? :confused24:
djh3 Posted September 25, 2017 #4 Posted September 25, 2017 What model Garmin? I have a 756t and I'm pretty sure it is stereo output. I had mine wired similarly minus the BT. Had garmin wired into splitter and phone with Pandora plugged into the other side. Using the wired headsets and it worked great.

I failed to mention it sounds fine with the engine off. I have the iPhone 7 so I can't plug it in to stream and charge at the same time. It only has one plug.
RDawson Posted September 25, 2017 Author #6 Posted September 25, 2017 I only tested it with engine off after install. Next morning when I tried it on the road it was noisy. I will open the fairing tomorrow and move the cables around to see if it makes a difference. Filter should be here Wednesday. I only ordered the 3.5mm filter, maybe should've got a power line filter also.
Freebird Posted September 25, 2017 #7 Posted September 25, 2017 You can get an adapter that converts it. It has a headphone jack as well as the charging jack. Here is one example. https://www.amazon.com/Lightning-Adapter-Earphone-Charging-Silvery/dp/B073WCJX5J/ref=sr_1_20_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1506311768&sr=8-20-spons&keywords=headphone+lightning+adapter&psc=1
RDawson Posted September 25, 2017 Author #8 Posted September 25, 2017 Thank you. I didn't know that was available.
Rafterd Posted September 25, 2017 #9 Posted September 25, 2017 I have this splitter on mine, https://www.ebay.com/i/291798362108 , and have my Edsets and gps along with XM rafio, Bluetooth, and original auxiliary input all plugged into it. Everything works off the auxiliary side on the input with no problems at all.
djh3 Posted September 26, 2017 #10 Posted September 26, 2017 Hum and buzz with engine on can be ignition interference. Could be the placement of intercom wiring. Sometimes if you pull the cables under the fairing apart and clean with contact cleaner and then apply some dielectric grease to them it will get ride of most of that.
RDawson Posted September 26, 2017 Author #11 Posted September 26, 2017 Work got in the way of the bike for a couple days, don't ya hate it when that happens? I have a filter coming Wednesday, when I get it I'll open the fairing. I plan to grease all connections, move cables around to try to find it, and add the filter. I'll post what I find. Give me a wrench or a volt meter and I'm ok, start adding the "ronics " to electric and I gotta back up a step.
djh3 Posted September 27, 2017 #12 Posted September 27, 2017 My radio on my Victory reception has gotten progressively worse in my opinion. I have a "dead spot" up by the traffic light at main road. Funny thing is my truck goes blank there also, but wifes car is fine. I'm thinking I need to OHM out the antenna and see if the cable is good. I put a signal booster on it a year or so back.
RDawson Posted September 29, 2017 Author #13 Posted September 29, 2017 Update. I updated the maps and software on the Garmin and put it back on, noise gone. I then figured out the streaming music over the Bluetooth receiver was tinny and somewhat muted when the gps was on. I installed the MPOW filter in different places of the splitter, once I put it between the gps and splitter everything worked great. The final configuration is Garmin 550 with Mpow filter, Edsets splitter cable, cheap Bluetooth receiver that hard wired in to power so it shuts down on key off(ebay), and a 3.5mm splitter. I now have gps, cell phone calls, and streaming pandora all through my helmets on the aux setting. IMC wired headsets.
