Air Ready Auto Posted September 16, 2017 #1 Posted September 16, 2017 Got 3 tags (my area opened up for an extra antlerless this year!) and only room in the freezer for 2. Guess I will have to eat one right away... Wish me luck. Stay safe out there all my fellow hunters.
cowpuc Posted September 16, 2017 #2 Posted September 16, 2017 Got 3 tags (my area opened up for an extra antlerless this year!) and only room in the freezer for 2. Guess I will have to eat one right away... Wish me luck. Stay safe out there all my fellow hunters. All the very very best of luck out there Ready!! I was an AVID deer harvester with both bow and gun for many many years (always said if push came to shove and they made me choose between taking with the gun = pistol included or bow I would have ABSOLUTELY chose bow hunting!! OUTSTANDING SPORT!! You hunt out of a tree? I always used a Baker Board and switched to TSS climbers when they came out = much easier on trees.. I also was a Boilermaker and spent a LOT of time on the iron wayyyy up yonder and loved heights.. Most deer seasons you could find me 30 feet up, standing on the edge of a 2x3 platform and swingin in the breeze... Man that fun.. About the only thing I really really enjoyed more than that (and the rush associated with nailing em) was scouting.. I LOVED scrape hunting but also loved runway hunting for Does when the meat was needed (my kids were raised on Venison = 5 a year = should a seen Tip carving and grinding Venison - AWESOME days.. When the kids were little I would climb up the tree with my climber, drag another stand up and hook it up beside me, drop a pair of Jeans down with a rope thru the belt loops and the kid would climb into em and I would haul them up in the tree with me and set them on the stand.. WHAT A BLAST!!! Kids loved watching daddy hunt and kill = by the way,, if you decide to do that I also learned that Green Skiddles are the candy of choice for keeping the kids quiet.. Never really got hurt all though I did slide my share of wet trees.. Smooth Maples and Birch were the worse - especially with the rubber on the bands of the TSS boards - all you had to do is step on the outside edge of the board to stop a slide - biggest thing being to do it FAST before ya hit the ground.. Worst injury I EVER had was when I dropped an arrow got loose from the nock, started on its way down and, out of reflex I caught it by the broadhead and sliced my hand/fingers pretty good - WOW those Wasp broadheads could cut.. Getting long = NAIL EM BROTHER!! In in the words that I used to speak to my family as I headed out for the night hunt = DEATH TO THE DEER (you know,, thinking that is still written on my bow hanging downstairs = I KNOW I still got a hat my deceased father had made for my with it on it)... Puc P.S. speaking from an ol geezer bow huntin fool = Bow Hunting 's would make your buddy almost as big as CTFW pics - close = very very close!!
Flyinfool Posted September 16, 2017 #3 Posted September 16, 2017 Well it is now 9:00am opening day, You got one in the bag yet.............................. I sure wish I were out there, but I guess I would have to a bunch of work on these aluminum crutches to quiet them up. Everyone in this house sure does like venison. Good luck, and like puc said, don't forget the pics, even if is just the view from your stand.
Guest Posted September 16, 2017 #4 Posted September 16, 2017 Good luck! I have to wait until October 1st........can't wait......
Air Ready Auto Posted September 17, 2017 Author #5 Posted September 17, 2017 1 of 3 in the freezer! Got her at 28.3 yards. Average sized doe. Already grilled up one of the back straps. Unfortunately the only rack I saw today was the one my wife occasionally lets me play with...:duck:She (the deer) came over the rise and I managed to get the shot off just as she winded me. Missed the heart and lungs. Clipped the main artery and she dropped about 50 yards out from blood loss. This is the monster I got last year. 225lbs gutted. He had the biggest body on any deer I have ever seen. 10 point.
Air Ready Auto Posted September 17, 2017 Author #6 Posted September 17, 2017 Rain... No hunting this morning:headache:

I'd bet my last Tamale (for another order of 12 of them) that that one right there had a blood trail so wide you coulda drove your car over and still had blood sticking out from its sides = NICE SHOT!!! Of course,, being a fellow bow deer slayer = you do know how close that was to getting into that nasty shoulder area where,, once that happens its down on the hands and knees looking for specks of blood for hours and hours and hours... But,, we wont go there,, we will DEFINITELY just call the clippin of the artery a genuine SKILL shot brother (this here is bow/deer hunting camp chatter folks - the kind of thing that goes on around the camp fire while your open fire cooking back straps from a freshly killed deer:Laugh:) Wanna hear a short story concerning the matter Ready? While your thinking about answering that I will go ahead and tell it.. Picture a young Puc with a Bear Recurve (first Bow), set of wooden arrows set up with those clip in cutters on their two blade broadheads (WOW is this going wayyy back).. Young Puc grabs a hot runway he has been scouting,, very active! Clueless though with a Bow,, Young Puc climbs up an oak tree and sits on a branch about 10 feet up, the runway passing below him also about 10 feet away from the base of the tree = NO CLUE.. About 9 in the morning, he hears a ruckus coming from his left side (good thing cause Puc is a right handed shooter) = someone got anzy and decided to leave the area (hunting state land - always someone goofing off) and spooked some deer. Puc see's a doe running right toward him - draws back on the recurve = pulls down on her and then he catches a glimpse in his perifrial vision of a rack!! Nice 6 point come RUNNING thru behind the doe - Puc aims at the front of the Buck and hits his back side:Avatars_Gee_George:.. Thing is,, and I will NEVER forget this,, Puc watches as his Arrow hits the side of the deer and the blood comes gushing out like a water from a fire hose = NO JOKE!!! :dancefool:Puc climbs down the tree, follows the car width wide blood spray thru the woods = the buck ran (like you said about your doe) MAYBE 50 yards and died standing upright between a small bushy grub oak gathering = CRAZY!! Gutting him out proved I had cut the femoral artery right behind the rear quarter panel!! Had already killed a few of em with the gun but NEVER seen anything even close to this!!! Sorry for the hi-jack Ready = your AWESOME fortune just brought up some really great mems = CONGRATS my friend = THAT is BEAUTIFUL!!:clap2::dancefool:

It was definitely impossible to miss. I can't claim that shot as skill though. I am also right-handed and I had heard something off to my right side and was poised ready to shoot in that direction. I heard something off to my left and just happened to catch her come over the rise out of the corner of my left eye. I swivelled, lined her up and shot in the matter of two Heartbeats. My family hunts for the meat so I'm not going to turn down an average sized anything that happens to come along. We finished butchering and grinding today. Got 19 and 1/2 lb of ground venison out of her plus all the good steaks. Going to make our secret Family Recipe venison burgers tonight!
Air Ready Auto Posted September 18, 2017 Author #9 Posted September 18, 2017 Sorry no pictures for the :cop:but I have to say... Darn good burgers tonight. Hey Mr Cowpuc, I will gladly trade you a dozen secret Family Recipe burgers for a dozen quarter-pound hot dogs. Just a thought.
