Curious.

Has anyone tried to use the points from one of those el cheapo fuel pumps found on eBay on your original fuel pump?

Or.. Is that the failure point on the el cheapos?

Or... Is it a different set of points altogether?

I ask because if they would work, the cheap pumps are cheaper to buy than the replacement points....

Just buy good points and put them on your good fuel pump and then you are good to go.

Powersportswarehouse.com

18-4615 k&l supply universal fuel pump points switch kit

You might be able to find the same 18-4615 somewhere else cheaper but this is the one that works on Gen 2 that I bought.

Good question. Never thought of that. I have one of the eBay pumps floating around here somewhere... but where?? Can't remember what I paid for it, but it didn't fit. Something like the bibs were 10mm and needed to be 8mm. It would be a simple thing to take it apart to see what they've done to makes them tick... Pun intended... If I could find it..??

I bought several of the 'Made in Japan' point sets for about $25 bucks apiece, used one, and the rest are in my 'just in case' stash.

I did but it don't have the power of the facet pump :parrots: :080402gudl_prv: the bike runs so much better with the facet pump & no Hiydrolock

The original question was whether anyone had tried to use the point set from one of the eBay fuel pumps. Have you??

That's what we need to know. Now I have one question... Maybe two?? Hydra-locks and leaks are mechanical in nature. How does an electrical set of breaker points effect them?? Perhaps the OEM fuel pump had more issues than just the points??

The points don't its the ebay pump that Hiydrolocks & leaks gas :parrots:put the points from the ebay pump in the OEM pump

My bad, I thought you said you had used the eBay points in an OEM pump. That's what the first post was asking...

If you install the knockoff China pumps, the first thing you will notice is the sound of the points clicking is quite different. It is louder and does not have the purrrrrr of the OEM.

I had one in my RSV for 15 months and it worked. We (me and VR members) had questioned the eBay seller and he insisted it has a check valve (in his best English).

But then one day, my crankcase filled with a gallon or two of gas. My mechanic said it was the O-rings in the carb had gone. But, I believe if the check valve did exist and did work, should not have done it.

But, back to the question, I'm saying that the points in the cheapo pumps do not have the smoothness of the OEM. They may work and if you got one already, worth a try. If you want to buy one to strip it out, go with the good points.

There are two of the cheap pumps available. One has larger fuel inlets. It is the wrong one. I know as I purchased one and discovered the problem. The other uses the smaller fuel lines and is the correct pump. I also purchased one of these. And it works just fine. It has been on my bike for well over a year and is still ticking. Yes it does sound different than the original pump.

These are a diaphragm pump with a shaft that rises to activate the spring loaded point set. Pretty simple and straight forward. I just do not see any way to install a check valve on a diaphragm pump that uses simple valves as these pumps do. Especially since the tank is above the pump. A one way or check valve would be possible if the carbs were above the tank. Also it is known that the bike can be run by gravity feed when the pump is broken if the tank is full enough. So I don't think any of them have a check valve. Just be sure to turn off your fuel valve when the bike is not in use. My guess is a hydro locked engine is more apt to be caused by a stuck inlet valve in a carburetor.

I also replaced the points in my original pump. It was not to hard of a job. It is now my spare.

Could I be wrong. Of course. I just don't think so.

I asked the original question because I bought a couple of those cheap pumps before I knew about their failure rate.

Hence the thought of maybe taking off the points and stick them in the bag of parts.

Guess I should find them and check the pipe size first. If it's correct, use that pump as a spare. Otherwise, pull the points and save them as emergency points.
