Little black box that causes the fuel pump to kick on. It in many different places on many different vehicles, Tinker has hers behind windsheild think its 2nd from the left if facing the front of the bike. Um I am thinking you may be able to get one new still but I got a used one in my saddlebag, just in case to rule out if fuel pump ever stops. I think I have even seen blue and green boxes. So what is the question.... or what about the relay,

It is important for you to know that the fuel pump relay is a SPECIAL relay and does not operate quite like a normal relay. It has some circuitry in it that, upon initial excitation, only stays on for a few seconds and then turns off. Once the bike starts running, ignition pulses from the TCI keep energizing the relay to keep it on. It is about a $100 or so part.

 

Normal operation is for the fuel pump to only run for a few seconds when the key is turned on and then stop. Once the bike is running then the fuel pump operation starts up again. A normal operation when the carb bowls are low is to turn the key on and off a few times to get the carbs filled up before trying to start the bike. This is necessary only when the bowls are low such as setting for a very long time and is not required for normal operation of the motorcycle when used regularly...

Thanks for that great information. When I Googled it one came up on eBay used but I didn't see any listings for new parts. Also just leads me to another question that's been bothering me. When I turn the key on before starting the bike I hear what I assume would be the fuel pump doing what you just told me it does pre-start. Although it sounds more like the level ride on my old El Dorado when it would pump up it when you started it. I guess I just don't know what that sound is

Okay sorry everybody. My mechanic says mine is currently working but is very concerned about its condition. As I mentioned just prior I did Google it but didn't see any new parts come up. There's a guy currently on eBay with a used one for $6.95. And a few others in that price range. I just thought if one of you guys had one I'd spend the money with you.

Why is your mechanic concerned about its condition? Just because it is old? Everything on that bike is old. Buying a used one will still be old.

 

 

Is it working intermittently, or is it the run for 2 seconds and then stop that has him concerned, or is there obvious damage to it?

If it is the short run then turn off, reread Bobs post.

I have never had an issue with it. He made a note on my repair bill last time it was in. When we talked about it he seemed concerned that it was in pretty toasty condition. He would rather have me do that than me pay him to take off all the plastic to get to it to replace. I'm good with that if I can find one

You need the mechanic to clarify what "toasty" means. The normal operation of the pump is to click for a few seconds and then shut off, if the bike doesn't start. This is a safety feature of the fuel circuit. The fuel pumps on the 1st Gens are very reliable.

Don't make sense... How would he know if its toasty if he hasn't pulled the plastic? Sorry just pointing out that him saying toasty really don't make sense...

This is a snipe hunt in my opinion! If he says he pulled the plastic, replaced the relay, and billed you for the labor, AND THE BIKE CONTINUES TO START AND RUN PROPERLY, how would you know if he really pulled the plastic and replaced the relay!?!? Ride the bike until the relay fails, carry a spare in your saddlebag if it makes you feel better, AND SAVE YOUR MONEY for brake pads or a new tire.

That is the thing he said the guy didn't want to have to charge him to pull plastics and replace the relay, But yet is calling the relay toasty.... How could he know that if he hasn't already pulled the plastics?.....

Because we had it all apart chasing an open ground that ended up being a blown CDI. (DCI?) I appreciate that they give me this option. I can take things apart put them back together but when it comes to anything technical I need help. I have full faith in these guys it's just that they're swamped. He promised me he'd give it a good hard ride before he gives it back to me so that I can take off with confidence. We're becoming friends.

 

I totally understand how blessed I am to have an experienced mechanic who appreciates RPM the way I do and isn't wishing I was on a Harley.

 

Cornhuskers suck so bad that I'll be able to ride on Saturdays until it gets cold

O I see didn't think about fairings needed to be removed for the TCI box... See what you guys did to me I find it the new norm not to disassemble my bike to get to my TCI box...... Lmao you all did not put TCI back in that stupid hole it was in did ya?
