my 99 paint question

My 99 has scratches on the fairing and a couple other places.It is the 2 tone one with parts of it being a grey metallic and the main color being sort of gold.I ordered 2 cans of paint $60 each to match the gold color.Both of them the wrong color even though Yamaha International assured me it was the right color.They used my vin to tell me what to buy.TouchUp direct said the second one was yellowish grey metallic.I need something kind of yellowish.But, both cans are grey.No yellowish or gold looking tint to it at all.Now I cant mail it back to them because shipping companies here have to have a hazmat license to do so.One ups place has the license but it costs too much to send it.I talked to the girl at touch up.She was clueless.She asked, seriously, can you send us a piece of the bike and maybe we could match it that way?

 

When I did a search myself the goldish color of a 2002 looks like it matches what I need for my 99.Any input appreciated.This is not a custom paint job, its factory.All paint chips for a 99 have no gold color, all are grey.A 98 royal star tour deluxe looks like it has the right color.I sure dont want to blow anymore money.I probably will go to an autopaint store.Perhaps they can match it.If I am doomed to paint the whole fairing, then the whole fairing wont match.

this why colorite is not right.As you can see the lighter goldish color on my bike is not even a choice. The marble silver for the darker part of the paint scheme is right.But I need the other color.

The problem with Colorite is california has banned the type of paint that our older bikes were painted with. And their factory is in California...so guess what? The color you order is correct, but due to the different makeup of the chemicals to make the paint, the color is wrong. I went through this last year with colorite.

 

Seriously!

 

Your best bet is to go to a local shop and hand them the fairing. They can match. Then get their advice and do it yourself. I bought a tiny air gun from harbor freight, and the result came out quite good.... Though it took a couple of tries and lots of painting advice from this forum.

 

Or let them do it. I had my 2nd gen fairing done by same guys that matched my 1st gens paint for me. $200 and a lifetime guarantee!

 

Btw, the color pen from Colorite for my 2nd gen was a good match. Good enough for small rock chips. But I wouldn't want to try and match a fairing. The 1st gen was way off on both colors

Being Colorblind it is a Bit** for me to match the things up. Think I'll go to Lowe's and get me a quart of whatever grabs me at that moment and a good brush!!! Maybe BLUE!!!

very interesting information about california,matching etc.Thanks so much.That explains everything.I will do the painting once I get the color.It is a small place to paint.I will blend it in.It doesnt have to be perfect,just look good,say 90% quality.

Good. One of the pieces of advice I got was to overspray the clear coat nicely. It did work that way.

I couldn't find my older post thread...but you can try and search using colorrite...maybe you'll have better luck. Lots of good advice on that thread....

Your bike is now 18 years old. There is now way a color ordered to factory specs is going to match anything. Best bet is to either repaint the entire bike the original color ( or a new color) or go to a paint shop and have them match what you have now. Most body shops have a color analyzer that match what your paint has become if you don't want to do the whole thing.

yipee.I went to a place today that specializes in all things autobody.They took some sort of strange camera, took a picture of the paint.But the paint was placed right on the fairing.A guy looked through it, took the picture.Then he put it in a machine, the machine somehow made paint that matched.Only $21.And they put it into a rattle can so i could do it.I thought that was pretty cool.I showed them the marble silver yamaha sold me.She said well, that certainly doesnt match does it. i said no mam, but now I have some that will.Well worth my time.
