2007 V-Star 1100 starter problem

My daughter's bike appears to be having starter issues. It is loud, like clanging when starting up or will do nothing at first then after a few attempts will start.

 

If I have to change it out can I get it rebuilt at one of my local started rebuilders? Any one know where I can get some pics on how to do it?
