djh3 Posted August 24, 2017 #1 Posted August 24, 2017 I am kind of helping a fellow out that is having an intermittent stall problem. He has a good fuel pump in it, (few weeks old) and just had the ignition switch out and checked it and cleaned the contacts. No rhyme or reason to it or pattern I have been able to pick up on. Will be riding and bike cuts off, will refire right back. So I have suggested by pass/jumper the handle bar kill switch. Also we have talked about the kick stand switch, but does that not only have something to do with start only? I'm kind of running out of ideas and leaning towards the pick up.
Freebird Posted August 24, 2017 #2 Posted August 24, 2017 It is a long shot but I've seen one case where the lean angle or "tip over" switch was bad and causing that exact problem.
sldunker Posted August 24, 2017 #3 Posted August 24, 2017 I would try bypassing side stand switch. 1st generations would have this problem occasionally and it was usually the side stand switch. They would cut out when going down the road or passing. These switches can be cleaned if the rubber boot is peeled back. But good luck it could be one of many things.
bongobobny Posted August 24, 2017 #4 Posted August 24, 2017 The kickstand switch WILL kill the bike if it is running in gear and it senses a kickstand down condition while in gear with the clutch out. I kind of doubt that is the issue though as you state the bike can be immediately restarted, and I kind of doubt the switch would only give a split second failure. If anything I would suspect the kill switch of doing that, so jumping that switch may be a good idea. I suppose you could jumper the kickstand switch as well but I'm not real keen on doing that. Just make sure you have no loose screws on the switch itself. When it dis, does it act like the ignition was killed, or does it act like it is starving for gas? That could be a clue to whether or not the issue is electrical or fuel delivery, such as a clogged fuel filter...
djh3 Posted August 25, 2017 Author #6 Posted August 25, 2017 Instant off. Just like cut switch off. So I and others are pretty sure its electrical. He jumpered the side stand switch today, and has put 150 miles on it. So far so good. You know I was looking at the tip over switch in the wire diagram last night and wondering that. And oddly enough some of the Victory's have a problematic issue with a tip over.
bongobobny Posted August 25, 2017 #7 Posted August 25, 2017 Dion, with the side stand switch, I have seen them cause issues when their continuity has been only 4 or 5 ohms and not 1 or 2 ohms, but not the intermittent issues like your friend is seeing. Makes me think more and more it is a loose screw or poor alignment with the switch if indeed that is the problem source... On an unrelated subject, do you know where the diode assembly is located on the 2nd Gens?? I've been trying to help a member out with his bike, and we suspect his diode assembly is fried, but neither of us know physically where it is. The parts fiche shows it "somewhere" along the wiring harness going to the fuse block assembly under the false battery cover on the left side...
djh3 Posted August 26, 2017 Author #8 Posted August 26, 2017 No I don't know where the diode is. I assume your talking the one that is in the side stand circuit? I don't know why there is even one there Best I can tell the circuit grounds to the ECM. Your guess is about as good as mine. Somewhere in the fuse box area in center there makes sense.
M61A1MECH Posted August 26, 2017 #9 Posted August 26, 2017 Diode assembly is #19 http://www.partsfish.com/oemparts/a/yam/50045f98f8700209bc794e98/electrical-1
bongobobny Posted August 26, 2017 #10 Posted August 26, 2017 Yup, Steve, as you can see that fiche is about clear as mud eh?!!? I'm thinking it may be somewhere along the harness where the stator and the Starting Circuit cut-off relay assembly plug into. The fiche shows that there is a break in the picture of the harness between the fuse block and where the assembly is. I went over to Pioneer Motorsports and they too have no clue where it is either! Unfortunately, with this person's particular problem, we need to test the diode to determine if his problem is the diode assembly or the internal diodes inside the Starting Circuit Cut-off Relay assembly. The guy is in Texas so there is no way I'm taking a ride over to help him troubleshoot, so everything is being handled via PM's. I gave him instructions to unplug the SCCR assembly, the side stand switch, and the clutch switch to isolate the diode assembly from the circuit and test the diode by using the Blue/Yellow and Blue/White leads. If that comes back as OK then he will have to test the internal diode via the pins on the SCCR assembly. His problem is the engine dies when he lets the clutch out in gear, which is usually the side stand switch, but also he states that in neutral the bike will not start unless he also squeezes the clutch! He also states the side stand switch tests OK. and I told him that the switch should read 1 ohm or less, not 3 or 4 ohms. He says it will not start in gear with the clutch depressed and the side stand up. Prior to this, he had the ignition switch bypassed before he replaced it and he thinks he may have messed up something and possibly caused one of the diodes to blow. I'm doubting he could have popped the diode assembly but there is a remote possibility he blasted one of the diodes in the relay assembly but this needs to be proved out as it is a difference in replacing a ten dollar part versus a hundred dollar part...
M61A1MECH Posted August 26, 2017 #11 Posted August 26, 2017 Yeah Bob, been about half heartedly following this thread and the original over on the DELPHI forum, pretty sure the last report from DELPHI was that he bypassed the side stand switch and was able ride with out incident, but there are two very similar threads running on this type of issue on the DELPHI forums, so I may be confused, happens way to often now that I am getting up in age.
bongobobny Posted August 26, 2017 #12 Posted August 26, 2017 Well, DUH!! If you bypass the SS switch, the switch is bad... The guy I'm trying to help is in Whitesboro TX with a 2006 so if the guy on the Delphi site is from there too then it's the same guy...
djh3 Posted August 27, 2017 Author #13 Posted August 27, 2017 Steve I'm asking around for John on Delphi. I think he does have 2 threads very close on there for some reason. He is located in Midland Mi.
