Bike is 09 with 98,000 miles.

Couple of questions: 1. Does the water pump on the 2nd gen make a tapping noise before it goes out? I've got a tapping noise coming from somewhere on the right side. It does it when changing gears at 1500 to maybe 2500 rpms(I'm guessing since I don't have a tach). It doesn't make this sound when in neutral and revving the engine

I thought to start with it was the last gas I put in it. That's when it all started. So I drained it all out and put in some hi-test no-knock. Regapped my plugs, synchronized the carbs, and cleaned my air filters. I looked all under and over for anything loose but couldn't find anything that might be rattling.

2. Could it be a clutch bolt backing out? I've had zero problems with the clutch since I installed the Barnett kit many thousands of miles back. I thought it might be a valve problem but It's been only 10k miles since last adjustment. Bike runs very good and returns 38-42 mpg. All plugs are firing, new plugs in less than a month ago. Gonna get a new gasket and pull the clutch cover next. All comments are appreciated.

My educated guess (ok somewhat educated) would point to something drive train. If it were a water pump, I think it would make it in gear or neutral at a specific RPM. My thoughts are the water pump don't know if its in gear or not. RPM it may know, but I forget how the pump is driven. Off the cams?

Thanks Dion, I thought it might be something on top as well but it only does it after warm-up. Seems to be rpm related.

Ok I. I'm just gonna throw this out there and see what kind of responses I get back.

I took my bike up to a dealer today to ask them to figure out the noise I was hearing. They told me it could be the timing chain guides. They said these bikes wear out the timing chains, tensioners, and guides. I've never once heard of this on a 1st gen , much less a 2nd gen. I know It's possible, but still anyone else ever run into this? Sounds to me like someone's blowing smoke.

Im on both Vmax and this Venture board and I cant recall hearing about a timing chain/guide failure. Not saying it cant happen but my guess is you can blow flatus smoke rings if you choose.

I dont have a high opinion of dealerships in general, id you have a stethoscope or even a screwdriver you may be able to narrow it down by listening. I found a knock in my clutch that way.

Problem is, it only does it when accelerating and slowing down between 20 to 55 mph. Running down the hiway you'd think there's not a thing wrong. It's kinda like spark knocking , but only on the front right cylinder. Kinda like an exhaust rattle if you know what I mean. I've pried, pulled and shook everything I could get a hold of trying to figure it out. Even pulled the clutch cover to see if one or two of the bolts that holds the Barnett clutch together had maybe backed out or broken. Nothing. While it sits idling you don't hear it. When you just rev it up you don't hear it either. Upon acceleration it sounds just like a valve tapping. It might have something to do with oil delivery, because if you stop for a few minutes then crank up and go again, it doesn't make the noise for about 1/2 mile or so. But I think if it were that, then I'd hear it when sitting still.

Nope, I just changed the oil last weekend. I was trying to rule out using a Wix filter last time, so last weekend I changed oil and filter. I had never used a Wix before. I knew other's had used one with no problems. Turns out it wasn't the filter.

Well I just got the bad news from the dealer. Rod bearing on #2 cylinder. I'm just flabbergasted. Really, the noise to me sounds like it's coming from #4 ! Dealer doesn't talk too favorable about a rebuild. He mentioned me looking for another engine. I think I'm gonna get a 2nd opinion before that happens. I told him this was almost unheard of for these engines, especially with only 98k on it!
