When stopped or just taking off my engine just stops like you turned the key off. It starts back up as soon as you hit the starter. I have had a hiccup before where it is momentary, but yesterday it would completely die, once while pulling out from a side street, which could have been serious if there had been traffic. I've checked connectors and switches for corrosion or just being loose. The relays in the system have voltage as they are supposed too. The radio nor none of the other accessories seem to lose power when this happens. I'm at a loss.

The kick stand switch were notorious for failing on the 1st Gen. I replaced two on my 87.

Check all the battery connectins 1st and make sure they are all clean and tight. Especially check the negative down on the engine on the right side and make sure it's clean. The 1st gen Ventures are finecky with electrical and dont have much tolerance for loose connections. After you have checked the batter connections then possible trouble shoot the other systems, were here for you so keep asking questions if you dont get it figured out.

Check the rubber hose next to Gas filler cap.

Remove hose, note the Very small Air Vent hole for the gas tank.

It might be plugged.

Rare occurence, but it does happen.

I believe I found and fixed the problem. It was in the kill switch on the handlebar. I took it apart and sprayed a little wd-40 in it. Operated it a few times, and have had no more trouble.

Thanks for all the other suggestions.
