Locate the gear selector switch. Unplug the switch and hook up an ohm meter on the lowest scale and check the resistance to ground in fifth you should see zero ohms to ground, and infinity in any other gear. The other wire on that switch is your neutral indicator, both contacts have a common ground to them.

 

An alternative method, with the key on run, and switch disconnected, jumper each of the contacts going into the main harness to ground. If the bulbs are good, they will light up when you apply ground...
