Bubber Posted July 26, 2017 #1 Posted July 26, 2017 I have a Rigid Power washer that I got from Gary K. it stopped running a while back and it just wont start. here are the particulars Subaru/Robins EX21EFI engine on a Rigid power washer. Gary told me that the thing just stopped on him and he could never get it started. Here is what I have done so far: changed new oil to the correct amount (there is a low oil shut off switch in the crank case) added new gas followed the starting instruction (4-6 PULLS WITH SWITCH OFF THEN SWITCH ON AND PULL) put gas in air box/ spark plug hole, it ran for a few firings pulled the vacuum line off that goes to the full pump and blew it out and cleaned it made sure the hose clams were tight on hose drained the full tank drained fuel lines Here is what I still intend to do: reassemble all part take fuel pump off the bottom of the throttle body and check the diaphragm for pin holes or what ever. fill with new premium gas to tank Evidently this is a known crappy design by Subaru and they have discontinued the EFI and only offer a carb model. They don't offer a carb retro fit for the EFI that I can see. ANY THOUGHTS OUT THERE OH SULTANS OF SMARTS? Bubber aka Steve
BlueSky Posted July 26, 2017 #2 Posted July 26, 2017 Put some Chevron Techron in the gas or Gumout with PEA. Use a little starter fluid on the air filter and run it and keep doing that a few times. Even though it is fuel injected, the fuel passages must be tiny for a little engine and they may be gummed up. Just wild guessing here. When my yard tools don't want to start, I use a little starter fluid to get them to fire at first. After they run a bit they usually will keep running. You do know that you shouldn't run pressure washers without the water hooked up and on?
bongobobny Posted July 26, 2017 #3 Posted July 26, 2017 You may be served better NOT using premium gas as it burns slower and the engine may not run properly with it...
Du-Rron Posted July 26, 2017 #4 Posted July 26, 2017 ANY THOUGHTS OUT THERE OH SULTANS OF SMARTS? Bubber aka Steve Take the pump off the engine. If it ever starts up dry you have just ruined the pump. Also the engine will be much easier to start without the pump on it.
Sylvester Posted July 27, 2017 #5 Posted July 27, 2017 Take the pump off the engine. If it ever starts up dry you have just ruined the pump. Also the engine will be much easier to start without the pump on it. Or have water running through the pump when starting.
djh3 Posted July 29, 2017 #6 Posted July 29, 2017 Hmm EFI on a yard mower motor. So say what do they use for a fuel pump? Is it pumping fuel? Decent pressure.
Bubber Posted July 30, 2017 Author #7 Posted July 30, 2017 Hmm EFI on a yard mower motor. So say what do they use for a fuel pump? Is it pumping fuel? Decent pressure. Believe it or not there is what is called a pulse pump on the bottom of the throttle body that gets vacuum from the engine that runs the pump. Way over engineered and just stupid on a small engine like this. Fighting this for a few days and am about to give up.
Flyinfool Posted July 31, 2017 #8 Posted July 31, 2017 Small engines are not that complicated, there has to be a way to retro a standard Brigs or Tecumseh carb onto that thing? It should not be to hard to make up an adapter plate? Just find a carb for an engine with similar HP and dump the problematic FI system. I found this with some good looking info on troubleshooting the EFI. https://www.ridgidforum.com/forum/power-tools/power-tool-discussion-forum/33773-3300-pressure-washer-will-not-stay-on
djh3 Posted August 1, 2017 #9 Posted August 1, 2017 Spray ur up with some carb cleaner. See if you can get some in the small passages. Maybe give it a shot and see if it will run off just some gas or carb spray to get the vacuum flowing. My thought the other day was same as Dans. A fellow should be able to figure out how to retro fit a carb to it.
