Shadetree Posted July 20, 2017 #1 Posted July 20, 2017 I need to have my 89VR (206 Miles) fuel tank relined. any suggestions on where, who, how?
camos Posted July 20, 2017 #2 Posted July 20, 2017 I have never had to deal with this problem but have heard both of these re-lining systems work well. http://www.dimecitycycles.com/red-kote-fuel-tank-sealer-liner.html http://www.por15.com/POR-15-Fuel-Tank-Repair-Kit_p_62.html
MiCarl Posted July 20, 2017 #3 Posted July 20, 2017 I've used THIS ONE with good results. They say it actually works best if you don't remove any rust that isn't loose. I do remove the rust because for the $$ I charge I cannot have customers looking in their tank and seeing rust through the epoxy (it's clear). On a 1st gen venture you cannot look into the fuel tank anyhow so I sure wouldn't do that there. You want to make sure you don't have any harden on threads, in vents or making something too narrow (where the fuel tap screws on and the cap sticks into the fill neck). I like to coat anything I don't want it to stick to with grease then peel or cut it away after it starts to set up but is still rubbery. Any vent lines (I don't know if the MKI tank has any) I blow out frequently with compressed air while it cures.
bongobobny Posted July 20, 2017 #4 Posted July 20, 2017 One of the best ways to clean up the insides of a tank prior to coating is to take a couple of pounds of galvanized roofing nails and load them onto the tank after duct taping off all of the openings except the main one, then duct tape that opening as well, then shake, rattle and roll the tank until you are exhausted then do it some more!! It's a good idea to have some friends over for a tank shake party. When you do it long enough you will find the interior of the tank looks shiny new when you empty the tank. Then comes time to coat the tank, I like Red Kote but Cream is a good product as well...
rbig1 Posted July 21, 2017 #5 Posted July 21, 2017 WELL... I did something a little different. I went and bought some liquid drain cleaner. Well lets back up. I took the fuel cock and made a tin plug bolted it on. Took out the fuel gauge and made a cover for that hole also. Then I put 10 nuts inside tank. Poured in the drain cleaner and matching amount of water. The son and I would shake the heck out of it off and on till morning. Then I drained out the crap and fished out the nuts which was a pain by the way. Flushed out the insides around five times with water. A lot of rust and scale came out. Then I sprayed the inside with pen-fluid to keep from rusting. Put it all back together and painted up the outside and put back on. I looked inside the tank today has rust spots but nothing loose. Good enough in my book.
