Dragonslayer Posted July 11, 2017 #26 Posted July 11, 2017 LOL, I have a 34 ft 5th wheel which I tow with an '03 F350 V10 ... I've named it "The Green Gobbler" cuz it's green and gobbles gas! The Green Guzzler sounds more appropriate.
Dragonslayer Posted July 11, 2017 #27 Posted July 11, 2017 (edited) The People that bring them in to our shop for repair say they get 6-8 mpg, My dodge truck with a cummins pulling a toy hauler loaded with a RSV get 10 mpg @ 70 mph Once upon a time, I bought a converted 44 passenger school bus off eBay. It looked pretty cool and the inside was done nice with components from a camper. I won the bid at about $1,500 as I recall. So the plan was to take a value jet to upper New York state, get picked up at the airport by the seller. Do the deal then I was going to drive it back to Georgia. I had not thought about it but soon realized when I started driving it that being a school bus it was geared real low. Going flat out down a steep hill with a strong tail wind it would not roll faster than 55 mph. Going up the slightest incline the top speed was 35 mph. No matter how hard stomped on the gas and lurched forward for extra manual assist. The next thing I realized was it only got about 4 miles to the gallon. The trip from upper NY to GA cost me more in gas than I paid for the thing. So plan B was to park it on the hunting lease to use as a hunting lodge since plan A to travel long distance touring was at that time economically unfeasible. That worked out great for a few years until we lost the hunting lease. Then I decided to park it in my driveway. On the side of my house until neighbors started to complain and called Code Enforcement. Evidently there is a county ordinance against parking school buses on private residential property. No matter what arguments I made in front of the judge that it was a motor home and not a school bus. In the judges assessment, it had been, was then and would always be a school bus no matter what I choose to call it. So he told me in no uncertain terms that I was to move it or risk jail time and be fined for code violations. A friend who had a property with a few acres volunteered to let me park it in his yard. Which was conveniently located near one of my favorite watering holes. This worked out great for awhile on nights that I had been over served or got lucky I had a handy apartment to crash in with out having to drive anywhere. Until his wife got tired of the dogs barking at my comings and goings in the middle of the night. The only thing I could do then was to send her back from where she came from. The bus, not the wife. So back to eBay she went. I did manage to sell it for more than twice what I paid for it plus a handsome delivery fee to Knoxville Tennessee. Now she is some one else' s problem.
