Illinois Ipass

Illinois charges tolls on the main highways in the state. Of course, the exact same highways go through the neighboring states which do not charge tolls. If you don't want to stop at every toll booth along the way and pay even more, you are forced to buy an electronic "Ipass" which is supposed to automatically identify you as you drive through the toll area and deduct the toll from an amount that you have deposited in your Ipass account.

 

The downside is that the Ipass things often don't work. So then you get a bill for $66 sent to the license plate owner on the car, instead of the normal ripoff charge of $6. You can search the Ipass website, find a phone number, and then wait on hold until hell actually freezes over in an attempt to correct the billing. Of course, you never will hear anything like, "Sorry for sending you such crappy equipment that you are forced to waste your day waiting on hold to sort out the billing!"

 

I just got off the phone with the barely understandable foreign accented Ipass guy. After getting the erroneous charge removed, he then asks, "Is there anything else I can help you with?" I said, "Sure, how about removing the tolls on your highways so that Illinois is just like all of the other states in this part of the country?" Turns out that he cannot do that! Sorry - just felt like venting and doing anything I can to dump on Illinois. If my wife's parents didn't live there, I would make every effort to never set foot in the state! F-em!

Pennsylvania is the same way and to add insult to injury, you have to pay to drive on some pretty bad stretches of toll road:bawling:

I have had IPass for10+ years, it has never messed up my billing. There have been times where they never charged me for a toll, especially on the bike. It is fairly often that the system does not register right away but will register a month later. I do have all correct vehicle descriptions and license plate numbers so that when they look at the picture and read the plate they know which account to charge.

I figure that on the bike it is either the weird colors of my collector plate or that the trunk hangs so far back over the plate that if the IPass does not pick up they have no clue who it was.

I don't disagree with anything you said except to slightly clarify the I Pass charging process. The toll autobilled to the account is 50% of what you would pay as cash at the toll both.

I have had IPass for several years in two different vehicles and never had a problem BUT as screwed up as this state is I know I am long overdue.

I do own homes in both Wisconsin and Illinois so I travel the same toll roads you do, zagger but will retire to just Wisconsin in a few years.

If your plate is registered with I-Pass even if it doesn't work it sill looks up your plate and deducts. If you jave an I-Pass and you call even if your plate wasn't on there they will still only charge you the toll. Happened with my daughters car which is in my name but she lives in florida and she was in chicago ans \\d I got something like $160 in fines and I called and they said no problem since I had an I-Pass in my name. I have never had any issues in 8 years. In fact I Belong to Bikers Against Child Abuse and when we go up as a group I add all my brothers bikes to my list and when they bill me I get it back from them.

Florida has EZ pass. Similar deal little electronic gizmo registered to your name/plates. Also attached is something they call "toll by plate" So if you have that issue your thingy dont click and they get your tag, they just deduct from your account. Now I will say the 2nd gen was depending on tool both. hit or miss. I have forgot the toll thing and still used the toll roads. Depending on the position of camera weather or not they could get a good shot of the tags.

While in Mosport race track one of the provincial LEO we were chatting with we had told him we were on our bikes. Told him what we had etc. He told us they used cameras for enforcement of speeding in a lot of parts. He told us (at that time) the chances of their cameras getting a tag # off the 2ng gen was not probable due to trunk being so close to tag and overhang.
