A few years back I had to add a sidecar to my 2000 Ventura. I did a V-Max rear change out which mad a world of difference. One thing I have noticed is the clutch. Most of the time when starting out in first it sort of seems like its straining. I was wondering if the Barrett clutch would be better. If so should it be a complete or just the spring conversion kit?

Kind of hard to answer as I do not know what you mean by straining.

The Barnett clutch is a great unit. You would only need the spring conversion kit. If you are having slippage problems, especially in the higher gears under load, this kit will correct that situation.

If your clutch is not slipping, the Barnett kit is not going to solve your problem.

The added weight/load from the sidecar may very well be a little hard on the "stock" 2nd gen clutch! The Barnett setup is the best answer, but also replace the stock clutch disc with the optional Yamaha Heavy Duty clutch disc!! There is a slightly alternative fix called the PCW Racing Heavy Duty Clutch Spring which also works wonders even without doing any further rebuilding/replacing, but even then still replacing the 1/2 area stock clutch plate with the HD one makes a difference! Us Trike owners already know how weak the stock setup is and have already replaced the clutch plate and either went Barnett or PCW...

I would ask what one you want with. I am a novice at that sort of thing. I was having power loss and found out about the V-Max rear from the site. That was a world of improvement.

 

Looking at some of the members that changed out their clutch and provided photos I think I can do this and would want to go with what those that have used the newer setup.

The Barnett clutch setup is excellent for improving performance of the clutch. I might suggest installing the heavy duty springs with the Barnett.

 

As for it seeming to lag in power, remember the V4 likes to rev. Don't drive it like a V-twin. Get the revs up to access the power from these engines.

I've installed the Barnett clutch with heavy duty springs on my 06 Vmax and used the OEM steels and frictions. It works very well.

I have a Barnett on order for my 13 RSV and will do the same.

If you choose the Barnett, be ready for a nice stiff lever pull like your OEM Harleys. Many times, Harley owners have a double take, rather, a double pull, when they try the lever for themselves. lol

The power band for the V4 can be found at a bit higher RPM than typical Twins.
