If the area is relatively small one alternative would be to spread a clear plastic sheet over it. You just cover the area you want bare with the plastic and hold it in place with rock or logs or whatever. The plants under the plastic will die and any seeds within sprouting depth will sprout and die also. Leave it in place 2-3 weeks and the spot will be dead so you can reseed grass. I remembered this eco-friendly method after posting the chemical route. It is just that this way will kill everything. Good luck.

2-4-D will take care of it. Its prevalent in my part of Missouri. 2-4 D will not hard most northern grasses, but will kill most weed grasses.
