I think I've caused myself a problem

Recommended Posts

It's finally springlike enough in Newfoundland that I tried to get my '12 venture going. The battery was kept up during the winter.

Today I dropped it in, turned the key on, selected neutral, and pushed start.

I did get the fuel pump noise when I turned the key on, and the dash lit normally. There was a repetitive rapid clicking which I took to mean the battery didn't have enough to turn the starter.

I put the battery on charge for a while and worked on another bike for an hour or so.

I disconnected the charger, turned on the key, dash lit normally. Pushed start and lost all power. No dash lights, no nothing. Cycled the key but no effect.

I have no lights, no apparent power anywhere.

Suggestions what to check welcome....

I replaced my battery this week from the same symptoms. It shorted inside the battery. It read 12.6 on a volt meter but dropped to less than 1 volt anytime I would put a load on it. Like you everything powered up until I hit the starter, I heard it go sounded like a fuse burning out. Try load testing it.

Put a volt meter across the battery terminals, it should read around 12.6V. Turn on the key and hit the starter, if the battery stays at 12V and the bike is dark, then the problem is in the bikes wiring, if the voltage drops by more than 2 or 3 volts, then the battery is the problem.

Looks like the battery was at fault. Dropped the battery from my Tour Deluxe in it and it fired right up. I'll put thru bad battery on charge overnight just to confirm but I think I'll need a battery.

Thanks for the help.
