I have been using Bosch 3323 oil filters for several years now, however I bought two recently and discovered that they have slightly changed the plate that screws onto the bike so it no longer has room to fit onto the bike.

Found the same on a Wix filter that was supposed fit the Goldwing, after seeing so many similar posts on the Purolator filters, I opened the Wix box in the store to check it out and it had the "inverted" dish. I ended up with a Bosh 3300, it has a concave surface.

I have no basis for this theory, but any times you will find that items like oil filters are actually made by only one or two factories, they use different filter media and pressure relief valves and what ever else may go into the filter based on how it is branded on the out side, Fram, Purolator, K&N Wix or what ever. So I think some one in the factory screwed up and got the mount plates on some filters loaded into the machine backwards or upside down. I do not think it is a design change, but a manufacturing screw up. But that is just an opinion and subject to be very wrong.

Moral of the story is, open the box and check the filter before you buy it. Hard to do if you buy on line like I have done in the past.

Good point, I will check the boxes and see if I can find any that will fit. The two I bought were probably form the same lot is why they were the same.

The newer Bosch 3300's now come with the convex dish. Many people that used them have had oil seepage at the gasket area. The Purolator Pure One PL14612has the same problem. I have switched to the Mobil1 M1-108.

Man this was discussed over a year ago. Someone here mentioned it and I had just changed my oil. Sure enough I had one of the "bad" filters. I am using the WIX 51356 from O'reilly's. I went to Advance and opened I bet 8 boxes and every one of them was convex (dish to top vs bottom) I think on the RSV I went the Mobil 1 route at the time.

I hate I missed last year's discussion it would have saved me time and money.

Man, I am sorry to hear about this as I use the Bosch as well, and I think I used my last one up last summer! Thanks for the heads up and I will be opening boxes at my local Auto Zone...

Try a KN303 from K&N. It has the handy dandy nut tacked on the crown for easy use of an open end wrench. I don't even remove my rectifier when changing the oil.

True enough. But in my world $15 for an oil filter is a bit much.

I contacted Bosh and explained the issue to them about the previous concave surface and the now convex surface on the base plate.

After being admonished that the filter in question 3300 was not designed for motorcycle applications they said the change from concave to convex was a DESIGN change not a manufacturing anomaly.

So one would expect that the other manufactures have also made a similar design change.

We will need to be diligent in inspecting the filters before purchasing them to be sure they will fit and seal, may have to re do the list of compatible filters for the Venture and the Goldwing, which by the way use the same filter.

never considered removing the rectifier to remove the filter. I've never found it to be in the way

I always ran the longer version filter on my 2nd gen. My thought is more filter media has to be good. And full syn oil. Usually Rotella T6
