RDawson Posted April 3, 2017 #1 Posted April 3, 2017 The 86 VR is back on the road after a 1 1/2 year hiatus. I just want to say thanks to snyper316 for the tech help on the TCI issue. Skydoc's clutch mod gives it a great grab, almost too good test driving it on a wet road. Second and third gear got a little squirrely. Countless other member posts have helped me to keep her on the road. I hope to make it to one of the get togethers this year and meet some of the group if I can keep too much work from getting in the way.
SilvrT Posted April 4, 2017 #3 Posted April 4, 2017 Dang .. that looks almost identical to the '87 I had... Awesome bike it was.
RDawson Posted April 4, 2017 Author #4 Posted April 4, 2017 SilverT they do look a lot alike but I can see in your pic yours was taken care of better. Mine was rode hard and put up wet by previous owner. It's been down, bought and rebuilt by a Honda dealer of all people. Engine cases could really use some help from staining and oxidation and the right side dash panels are pretty rough. I bought it several years ago from Wilf over at Hannigans just for a rider. Since I can't find anything I like better I'm slowly trying to restore it before I retire in 4-1/2 years. Only 42k on the clock. Dave Hannigan had one in his collection I was pestering him to sell for months before I got this one.
SilvrT Posted April 4, 2017 #5 Posted April 4, 2017 SilverT they do look a lot alike but I can see in your pic yours was taken care of better. Mine was a "blond" when I got it. Looked ok but as I started to dig into it I found all kinds of "cosmetic" issues. Trunk and bags were cracked, shrouds inside fairing were loose and rattling, engine cases were showing their age, etc. I spent a winter tearing it down and fixing and polishing everything ... and what you see above is the end result. Loved that bike but after about 4 years I was itching for a newer version so I bought an '06 Midnight. FWIW, I preferred the '87.

I get what you mean with the itch, I keep thinking the same thing until I test ride something and get back on mine. I haven't found anything that compares. Maybe one of these days I can get it looking like yours.
