I attempted to ride my 83 standard to the meeting I had today. I got about 2/3rds of the way there and stopped for a stretch. Volt meter on dash has been acting weird and I thought it was just a bad connection. It charged good at first then seemed to drop off to battery voltage. barely got the bike started after stretching my legs so I turned around and went home. checked over the charging system and the stator is toast. everything else looks good so I ordered a new stator. should have it by Saturday. Worse part is it is a beautiful day and no two wheeler to enjoy it.

34 year old stator sounds like a well made part to me. Put the puller on now, tighten it up, put a pillow up to catch it and go to bed. Saves alot of frustration later. Still waiting for clearer weather here for any riding.

No need for a puller if you are changing the stator. Now if you want to change the rotor to replace the starter clutch,,,, you WILL need a puller and time and rags and a basket, and a new vocabulary.

How right you are Marcarl. I was having a brain fart.:buttkick: The stator is located in the right hand engine cover. Good design putting it there instead of under the flywheel. Been awhile since I've been in there. Yamaha did make these engines pretty easy to work on compared to the engines of yesteryear. :happy34:

It looks like someone had the stator off before. At the very least someone replaced one of the Phillips head screws that hold the stator to the case with a flat head screw.

Only 31,000 miles on the bike so it isn't even broke in but I guess after 34yrs we all start to break down a little. Gotta get it back into running condition for a trip to St Louis the end of April.

Best do a check on the RR as well. With so few miles and already the 2nd stator, there maybe something making them go bad. Could be that the PO wanted to install a higher output one, or the original was a bad one, but it won't hurt to check it out.

I'll do that.

I bought it from the original owner in August 2014. I know that he took reasonably good care of it except he didn't ride it enough.

The only upgrades he did was to have the dealer add an aftermarket radio to it as it is a standard and came without.

he did mention a few repairs he had done by dealership including fork seals but that was probably 10 or more years ago.

Warm enough in the garage now to spend some time tweaking little things before riding season gets into full swing.

Dont forget you guys, the MK1's needed the updated oil cooling splash plate and crank bolt with the oil orvice in it.. Rev, just make sure she's been updated or you'll keep roasting those stator's like us Michiganders roast hot dogs = crispy!! Also,, double check that connector where the 3 stator wires plug into the main harness up on the frame.. Make sure that internally the integrity of the plug is good - dont want no stickin terminals touchin each other and causes shorts...

Checked and it does have the updated cooling splash plate and crank bolt with orifice. The connector looks to be in good shape as well.

The coils on the stator seem to look fine, not burnt or overheated, but when I checked for short to ground two of the three stator leads had dead shorts.

I think the Service Update also included a new stator for some of the bikes. The picture on page three illustrates the "punch mark" that dealer would have made when when if it was Service Update was done. The picture on page 2 shows the "ID mark on the new rotor bolt".

I would think that the original owner would have had it done. It was free to the owner.

I only have it as jpegs

I got the stator last Friday and its all back together.

I even got in a 40 mile ride on Saturday just to see if anything would fall off. All is good.

Charging system is working fine now. I did find where the insulation on the stator leads had crumbled on the back side of the stator.

RR checked out fine and I think I'm ready for my trip the end of April.

I still need to change the oil but otherwise ready for the season.

The sun came out today so I think I need another road test just to be sure.
