Sometimes a main bearing will knock on startup until the oil pressure hits the bearings. But that knock is more of a dull metallic sound. Lifter noise is usually more high pitched.

I have read many reviews on the tahoes specifically 5.3L last well over 300,xxx as long as taken care of also evidently its an ls motor whatever that means... I had been a ford man up till about 6 yrs ago after I got my S-15 then the Jimmy still half own a 97 ford mustang but I like Chevy just don't know much about them...

My 2004 Yukon XL SLT with 5.3 has 186K now. Has had a hard life towing 4200 pound boat around the country....and living in Arizona.

Still running very well. Did belts and hoses at 106K with the 100K service. So far, except for a motor whoopie for the rear heat and a dash speedo recall, she has performed flawlessly. Still has original brakes, water pump, alternator, etc..

 

I put on tires and do the oil changes.

During my misspent youth, I bought a 59 Chevy Impala coupe (1964)with the 283 cu in V8. It developed a knock that sounded like a main bearing. I had a good mechanic listen to it and he also thought it was a main bearing knock. It didn't appear to be getting any worse so I continued to drive it. This car came stock with a 4.11 rear since it had the electric overdrive 3 speed manual tranny. One night I wound it up and a valve lifter collapsed. I replaced the lifter and the knock was gone. Noises are very difficult to diagnose sometimes.

 

I bought a new 70 Mustang fastback with a 302 V8. It started whining when I put it in drive or reverse and would stop whining when I started moving. I had a 50k warranty on the drive train and it was running out on a 6k mile tour of the country so I pulled into a Ford dealer shop in Ft. Smith Arkansas. I had thought it was the transmission making the noise. The shop foreman agreed with me. He had several mechanics listen to it and they all agreed it was the tranny and they started talking about rebuilding it. Then one guy said, maybe we should get "old Joe" to look at it. "old Joe" was in the office with his feet on a desk drinking coffee. He came out, listened to it, pulled out the longest screwdriver I have ever seen and placed it on several parts in the engine compartment and listened. The he picked up his coffee, said take off the alternator belt and see if it still does it, and went back into the office. they removed the belt and the noise went away. So, "old Joe" saved Ford Motor Co. the cost of a transmission rebuild that day and saved me a lot of inconvenience waiting for them to rebuild the tranny. I wonder how many dealer shops today would keep an experienced "old Joe" around. They all seem to be hiring parts replacers out of the tech schools.

I really wasn't meaning to :hijacked:... Anyways with the way sounds carry maybe old joe was half deaf...... I knew a guy like that who was half deaf and could centralize a sound, he is gone now but he was a good mechanic. He had built alot of screaming cars back in the day before people worried about hearing protection probably contributed to him being in tune with cars.

 

But back to the TOPIC when you picking up the bike?

Last I remember he and Mcompton arrived at a price. I hope he got it. I dont need another Venture but for the price that I heard I would have probably gone after it anyway. Maybe when the buyer gets it home it will appear on this forum yet again. I'm going to loose sleep if I never find out what the dealio was with the carbs!:confused24:

I have it.....sort of.

Posted it on Uship to have someone haul it for me. Got a guy to haul it almost 700 miles for $300. Figured it would cost me that much in gas and eats, and this way I dont have to drive 20 hours total. Bike should be here early afternoon tomorrow.

I would be interested to see what exactly this bike is doing.... I see your in Oklahoma Never heard of Castle tho but googled it and looks like fun roads... I am wondering if maybe some Jets got mixed up... I don't know if that would affect anything or not but I do know there is 3 screws that look identical but have different sized holes and one is pretty good sized.. and the other two appear almost alike but one is just a bit bigger. That might do that... Just a thought.

I am kind of thinking about buying a different set of carbs off ebay, or if I can buy a 1300 parts bike cheap enough...just see what happens.

 

Castle...about 200 people. lol....and I am several miles outside of that. The good roads are east of here.

Or you could send your carbs off to Danny, it would cost more than Ebay carbs but you would know that they were done correctly and ready to run.

I like ebay I missed out on a good set of carbs they had videos of it being dino'd and ridden.. The were asking 250 for them... I was trying to figure out why they were tearing down a perfectly good bike...

I contacted him. 100% good to send carbs to him except he doesnt think it is a carb issue. Here is my conversation with him today.

 

me: " got the bike here today.

Starts up surprisingly well. My understanding is that it will run pretty good until it gets warm. Then it wants to flood. Specifically when he would try to start the bike while warm it would overflow fuel. Apparently it started this after running some Sea Foam through the tank.

 

 

My question to you. How confident are you that this would be a carb problem"

Hey Mike,

From the way you describe it, that doesn't sound like a carb problem at all. Unless it's something weird like a valve or ring issue, altho I'm not sure how they could affect it like you describe.

 

I can't think of anything that would cause the fuel to overflow like that.
