Yeah, those breakfast bars are loaded with sugar. They may be nutritional but not low calorie.

I wrote emails to my Congressman and both my Senators suggesting they implement a tax on sugar and an additional tax on soft drinks to help pay for health care. If it reduces sugar consumption it will make us healthier. If it doesn't the health care system could use the money to pay for health care for all those people who consume the sugar. It's a win, win.

Yup, and we need to have additional taxes on fried foods.....and red meat.....and riders that don't wear helmets.....we could use the additional tax revenue for nutrition and motorcycle education.

More regulation and taxation will set us straight......

I appreciate your response.

A few years ago, I would have agreed with you. However, Americans are getting SO FAT. Women weigh more than men did 50 years ago. Obesity is a major problem that is only getting worse. Every time I go to Walmart, I see many shoppers riding the motorized shopping carts with fat hanging off the seat. Invariably the cart contains Pepsi, chips, and maybe ice cream. I suspect they are all getting a social security disablility check. It's contributing to major increases in health care cost because of joint problems, heart problems, diabetes. and mulitple other problems. Since we don't have the self discipline to keep from getting fat and driving up health care costs, I think a sugar tax is a great idea. Sugar is a carbohydrate that provides calories and no other nutritional value. We tax the heck out of alcohol and tobacco. Maybe sugar taxes should be implemented.

Hey I ride one of those carts when I find one, and I receive a SSI check from the Government, but I worked my ass off for 45 years for it. If I want to eat a pound of sugar it's my choice, not someone else's. Taxation is just another way for certain people to control others. If someone wants to do anything, and it doesn't hurt any one else, they should be free to do so. I get really tired of certain factions of our society trying to tax everything in sight. For the good of others?? Really?? Come'on it's to raise more money for them to spend the way they want to. Personally, since you brought it up, we need to get rid of tax on all consumables, and rely on sales and income tax only. Live within our means... what a concept...

I spoke of disability SS checks. I get an SS check. I filed when I was 69 years old because I was still working. Health care cost is rapidly spinning out of control. I don't know the answer to get it under control and still provide quality health care for everyone. Most countries have single payer where health care is rationed to keep cost down. Older people who need the most health care don't get the care they need. We are unique in our way of providing health care. I hope we can come up with a decent system that the country can afford, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Hey I will be the first to admit I am overweight, However I weighed a whopping 175 when I was put on a drug for high blood pressure called metropropolal within 4 months i had gained over 100lbs.... before I knew it I weighed 338lbs. My Dr I currently have took me off of it and put me on losartan pot. within a month or so I had lost about 50lbs, my feet no longer swelled up like ballons, still have problems with my legs doing some strange things. Matter of fact still trying to get answers about that but I can not believe my previous Dr kept me on meds that was doing that crap to my body, I was pretty much healthy granted I wanted to be at my high school weight of 140 but hell I miss my 175 big time... even tho I have arthritis and degenerative disk disease in my back I bet that kind of weight would be alot better on my body... What I really miss is going to a Dr office and them sitting down with you talking to you, now its kinda like Wam bam, thank you, bye... I am lucky because right now my Dr does do his best to sit down ask how things are going and show real concern for things. But my previous one was Wam Bam....

SSD or SSI has nothing to do with it, it's the taxation suggestion as a way of forcing a dietary concept, in your original post that pushes my button... I'm going back to my bowl of ice cream now.... :ice_awesome-vi46644

Well, lets face it. Medical insurance is a form of socialism. If we were totally independent, we would not participate and would pay for our own medical costs. If we take risks or over eat and eat food that is bad for us, we would pay out of our own pockets for our higher risk choices. But we choose to have medical insurance that we pay for individually into a pool and expect the pool to pay for our medical costs. And the pool pays for our high risk actions that we demand to be able to do as we choose. Nothing is that simple it seems. Both houses of Congress and the President are trying their best to come up with an equitable lower cost answer to this issue. Good luck to them. They are going to need it. I hope they succeed.

I agree with the socialism. Especially when it comes to creating new taxes. I wasn't going to mention it for fear that this thread would drift off into a political... My problem with the AHC... is it was created to control. As far as I'm concerned the old health care system worked. The problem was all the graft and corruption that was causing premiums to sky rocket. It was a form of anarchy by both the suppliers and the receivers. No control, and a legal system full of ambulance chasers that were gorging at the pig trough.... I also hope the light bulb does go on and they do find something that will work. And you're right nothing is as simple as it seems, but creating a new tax is not the answer.

I think the ACA was created to insure all the people who can't pay for insurance and to create such chaos that it would pave the way for a single payer system which is the preference of the party that created the ACA.

Sorry...don't think so....

I don't think med ins will ever be affordable again. There are so many super expensive operations and procedures that modern technology has given us that so many people need, it has to be very expensive in my opinion.

Dental cost can be prohibitive too if you need dental implants.

Canada has had basic universal health care since 1961 and it is affordable. I've been paying into it all my working life. Currently I pay $75 per month but the fee was much less when it started...naturally. The primary reason for affordability is that everyone must pay into it. It works just like any other group plan offered by insurance companies, the bigger the group the lower the premium. There are also a lot of group plans that offer coverage over and above what is available through the public system. This provides choices to everyone who thinks they need and can afford more coverage than what is offered by the public system.

For my monthly premium I get to see the GP of my choice, surgeons and other specialists can only be seen with a referral from my GP. Prescription meds are not covered except for those on social assistance. Nor is any dental care provided. That seems short sighted to me but...

To put it into real terms, I have been healthier than the average person I know when it comes to minor maladies and broken bones etc. That said, there have been times in my life though when I have had to deal with serious issues. When I was 25 I picked up a case of TB when I was traveling in Asia. Spent 6 months in hospital before being cured. When I was 38 I had to have my thyroid nuked and required medication and monitoring for about 8 years afterward. When I was 45 I needed a stent to repair a blockage in a heart vein and spent 2 weeks in the hospital before that was done. So high blood pressure and cholesterol meds were required since then. That incident caused me to reassess my diet, fortunately at no cost to the system. So I see my GP once a year for med prescriptions.

It's not perfect and there are limitations particularly for the less affluent members of society. I think the system we have could be better but it beats the heck out of no system at all. Or the one in the US where the cost is so prohibitive that only the well off can manage to live through a medical emergency without incurring a huge debt load that pretty much messes with your future viability.

Without public health care it is unlikely I would have managed to be a productive member of society. That is the real benefit of such a system.

@ Condor:

Social Security is not very different from Public Health Care since they both have similar goals. If you are OK with one then it should not be much of a stretch to be OK with the other.

I just want to see Affordable..... forced to get it but can't afford Dr.s or Prescriptions. Now Dental and eyeglasses are a different story very affordable......
The cost of prescriptions in NA are ridiculously high when compared to the cost in Europe. Our guvmint is beginning to realize they should be demanding a better break for public health prescription meds. That being all the medications administered while in hospital are not charged to the patient.

A federally mandated minimum healthcare service for all makes sense to me leaving the provinces or states or individuals to arrange more privately as desired.

Dental and Eye Health in Canada are not covered and are expensive here. The only competition here for dental health is in Mexico where it is half price or less. I think that should change since without sight or teeth a person cannot be as productive as they might otherwise be which would be detrimental to society as a whole.

One major flaw in the US system is that there is nothing to control cost of Doctors and Hospitals. The AMA meets once a year to set prices for the doctors and have a monopoly that has been allowed so far with the exception of medicare patients where there are allowed prices. The hospitals in the USA charge people who have insurance exorbitant prices to make up for the ones who never pay.
