If you're really talking about the drive shaft I've found it's just a matter of trial and error and lots of patience. The u-joint will pivot so the socket doesn't line up with the shaft. You have to feel for it and steer it back to centered as you slide the shaft in.

 

If you're talking about getting the wheel to engage the drive hub install the axle through the wheel (without the caliper and bracket), put the motorcycle in gear and rotate the tire back and forth as you try and slide it to the left. Once it slides over pull the axle back out and put the remaining parts on.

I've done mine awhile back and if I am not mistaken, there is a small hole on the left side and you have to use a coat hanger to gently lift it up while you slide in the shaft. An extra hand can save you lots of time.
