BlueBeard Posted February 14, 2017 #1 Posted February 14, 2017 Time for a battery. Any recommendations?
snyper316 Posted February 14, 2017 #2 Posted February 14, 2017 Not another battery thread, I will say one thing whatever brand of battery you get make sure its AGM. I was skeptical until I found out over this winter the proof was right under my nose the hole time. I had one in a Rebel since March and there has been very long stretches I have not rode it. Never touched with battery charger, and I can go out there right now after its been sitting for 4 months and fire it right over. I put AGM in Tinker and played with LEDs and all that jazz and she had sat for a month or so and she spun right over. Very good batteries so far!!!
BlueSky Posted February 14, 2017 #4 Posted February 14, 2017 Yep, AGM is the way to go unless you have the money to waste on a Lithium.
Flyinfool Posted February 14, 2017 #5 Posted February 14, 2017 And then there are those of us that tried AGM and went back to a good old Yuasa flooded cell battery. Yes a new AGM has more energy than an old flooded battery. BUT AGM is also more fragile and easy to kill. I tried 2 different AGMs and never got more than 3 years out of one. My Yuasas last me 6-7 years and cost less up front. Yes they crank the engine a bit slower, but it always starts when told to. Granted I am not gentle on a battery. They get to sit outside all winter for 6 months being totally ignored with temps as low as -25F. AGM does not like that, you have to baby them, take them out of bike, bring them into a warm house, put a maintainer on them...........
bongobobny Posted February 14, 2017 #6 Posted February 14, 2017 If you decide on AGM then contact member Skydoc_17, he is a distributor for DEKA and gives you a great price delivered to your door!
snyper316 Posted February 14, 2017 #7 Posted February 14, 2017 Ha fool no wonder your agm don't last long.. My bike sits in a semi heated garage!! In the bikes!!
Flyinfool Posted February 14, 2017 #8 Posted February 14, 2017 But the Yuasa does not mind that treatment is my point.
snyper316 Posted February 15, 2017 #9 Posted February 15, 2017 Isn't that battery made in the USA anyways? Most batteries are made in foreign countries. Hard to find anything made here anymore:(
BlueSky Posted February 15, 2017 #10 Posted February 15, 2017 I was just looking on line for a motorcycle battery and Lowes building supply has Deka AGM size 14 batterys for less than $80. You may have to get them shipped to the store so a wait will be involved.
cowpuc Posted February 15, 2017 #11 Posted February 15, 2017 I normally just do the ol Walmart flooded cell routine so if I need a battery on the road its a simple, swap out for free deal. However, I just noticed these on Ebay and gonna pick one up.. 35 bucks shipped = good deal.. http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-12v-Fire-Power-Battery-c50-n18l-a-with-Free-acid-Y50-N18L-A-/182102431386?hash=item2a6626969a:g:Nh4AAOSw1DtXGjYK&vxp=mtr Word to the wise,, tired batteries are really really hard on the starter and other electrical components.. A good battery is CHEAP insurance against future issues, especially when those future issues have a tendency of showing up at the wrong time - IMHO... Forget that trying to extend battery life just one more year - if its weak, replace it!!
BlueSky Posted February 15, 2017 #12 Posted February 15, 2017 The battery in my ZN700 would not start the bike. The voltage checked good for a fully charged battery, so I thought it was an electrical problem. I just took it to an Autozone store and they checked it and said it wouldn't support any load even though it checked 12.6 volts. So, I bought their AGM for my bike at about $82. Now the starter spins the engine really fast. The crazy thing was that when the 6 yr old AGM failed, it went from spinning the engine really fast to dead. Something inside shorted or broke or something. Anyhow, that's my battery story for today!
Du-Rron Posted February 15, 2017 #13 Posted February 15, 2017 = good deal.. http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-12v-Fire-Power-Battery-c50-n18l-a-with-Free-acid-Y50-N18L-A-/182102431386?hash=item2a6626969a:g:Nh4AAOSw1DtXGjYK&vxp=mtr I just clicked on that link. baylensman Posted February 16, 2017 #16 Posted February 16, 2017 Perhaps, the battery is clearly displayed holding up the Smith girls. WELL THE PICTURED ITEM GOT MY MOTOR RUNNING! I just might need to by a back up and keep it in the work shed!

Kirby Posted February 16, 2017 #18 Posted February 16, 2017 My 09 still has the original Yuasa in it and I load tested it not long ago. Still checks out good with 95,000 miles on it. But then, it doesn't get to sit still very often.
Mike G in SC Posted February 16, 2017 #19 Posted February 16, 2017 Just don't bother with Advance Auto MC batteries. They are lucky to last 10 months, with 3 month warranty. Had 3. The last one I had, two months old, when I put my two bikes on identical Battery Tender Plus, the Yuasa was full green in minutes, the Advance took overnight to go green. I even swapped the chargers around. So, rather than waiting for the reaper, I got another Yuasa and moved the Advance to the shop for backup. A Honda dealer shop told me Advance uses as little lead as they can get away with. Shame.
leroy Posted February 17, 2017 #20 Posted February 17, 2017 Battery Stuff http://www.batterystuff.com YTX20HL-BS 310 CCA AGM made by YUASA sold under the Motocross name. This is the one I put in my RSV. YUASA manufactured is the only way to go. I have been running YUASA AGMs since 2008 in my VTX, never failed. But to be honest although I have it on a tender when not riding I still replace before failure as I don't want it to fail out in the far away places I ride. I tried the Ballistic lithium in my VTX. I bought the one recommended by their chart. A total waste of money. When the temps dropped below 60 I had it cranked very slow like an almost dead battery. I had to hit the starter more than three times. The colder it got the slower it turned. in the high 30's it took 10 tries to get the engine to turn over fast enough to start. They said that was normal as it had to "warm up" to develope the cranking power. BS! Meanwhile the starter wears out. Maybe they are better now but I would not waste my $. Just my experience which is limited on the RSV as I put only 8000 miles on it in 8 months. But on my VTX 125,000 in 8 years in all sorts of weather all across US and Canada.
snyper316 Posted February 18, 2017 #21 Posted February 18, 2017 Omg that is Hillarious Smith Family Power sports is about 5 miles from me, So I get to see them in person:Bunny2:, Now quiet I am hunting Rabits fools!!!
snyper316 Posted February 18, 2017 #22 Posted February 18, 2017 Not sure who is posted but there is a blonde and a brunette down there.
Flyinfool Posted February 20, 2017 #23 Posted February 20, 2017 FWIW Today was nice out so I went out to the garden shed and the bike was still there. The last time I even saw it was in October of 2016. I stuck in the key and had to cycle the kill switch twice to fill the carbs, pushed the start button and it fired instantly, just like it should. So after the 3 year old battery sitting in the bike outside in the Wisconsin winter for 4.5 months with no charger or maintainer, It had no problem cranking up the bike. Yes I like my good old Flooded Yuasa.

Had original Yuasa original for over 9 years. Replaced with Deka agm in 09 before they were even popular. Last 3 years. Because of price at wholesaler I bought another one this time using maintainer and in basement. Again , little over 3 years. Found another Yausa lead acid will see what happens. Maybe I need to try a agm for my cars even those lead acid ones been working many years for me. Yea Right
