baylensman Posted January 20, 2017 #1 Posted January 20, 2017 So I love my bike, but I miss the speed of my old one. I can't buy a new Raider right now, and I want to keep the 07 RSV till I retire and then get a new tourer, so I'm stuck building up a used (read cheaper) bike. I've sat on and test ridden a dozen V-Max units,I have to say it is the most uncomfortable piece of engineering i've ever ridden, its definitely not designed foxy 6 foot 280 lb frame! I've adjust bars and pegs to no avail, i really wanted it to work. I had a 96 RS, that i did throw a windshield mount and a pair of leather bags on. I added a DYNA kit and a complete Super trap Header and muffler kit, modified air box, retuned the carbs to match, hotter plugs. ect When i flicked my wrist it moved!!! I don't want a crotch rocket, I like the "Classic" look of the street cruiser and the way you surprise the "stuffing" out of guys on crotch rockets when you just blow them away at a light. Does anyone have an experience with "waking" up a the V-twins? I'm open to any brand Kawaski, Susuki whatever. How about high speed stability? The 96 felt very comfortable with the speedo on the pin. The reason I'm asking about V-twins other than Harley is there seems to be a lot more off the shelf "Mods" out there for the genre and therefore a bit cheaper choices. So has any one else done anything similar or bought something similar? Recommendation and model to avoid?
cowpuc Posted January 20, 2017 #2 Posted January 20, 2017 I have done a fair amount of building/tuning the V-Twins BUT mostly Harley. Reason being, HD is one of the only manufacturers that has maintained a HUGE support for that cause. Even the now defunct Victory line never did come up with a "race tuner" that offered the parameters necessary for getting a good tune after investing time n money in cams, pistons, headwork, crank welding, pipes and on and on. Without a decent tuner - it's kind of all for naught IMHO.. Harley (and the aftermarket suppliers thereof) REALLY does a GREAT job of offering all the good stuff necessary for the modern day gearhead to build till the heart is content - IMHO.. Interesting you mention V-Max ride characteristics in this post.. I am right there with ya brother - one of the things I really never appreciated about my old V-Max (name was Crud) was exactly that - was no flogging that puppy in the twisties I tell ya!! I did have thoughts and intent of someday building a Maxed out Venture but ran out of time on my personal health meter.. I wonder if your need to build for speed and need to be able to "ride" what ya got wouldnt be more satisfied by following that trail? One thing about it, if ya did that there would be endless technical advice found in the heads of this group of lop eared varmints!!!!
WildBill1 Posted January 21, 2017 #3 Posted January 21, 2017 There's one in the classifieds under other bikes Honda VTX 1800 water cooler. Will out run any stock Harley 1800 out there.
BratmanXj Posted January 23, 2017 #4 Posted January 23, 2017 Ever looked into the RS Warrior? 1700cc V-Twin with the front suspension off the previous generation R1 and a 200 rear wheel. A V-bak, Power Tuner & a set of Samson ground pounders it's a pretty sweet ride. 1st gens (02-05) can be found around here for under $5k, even came a cross a few for under $3k in serviceable shape.

I'm really looking for a Fuel Injected bike. I guess i hit cycle trader and start research on various nearby cheap units.
BratmanXj Posted January 26, 2017 #6 Posted January 26, 2017 (edited) RS Warriors were FI from the start in '02. They did come from the factory with a "water heater" for a muffler but there are a lot of aftermarket options. Neither of these are mine...I currently "posses" an '07 with the later model radial brakes & different wheels, but otherwise identical to the top grey bike. My riding buddy has a similar '06 I believe. Edited January 26, 2017 by BratmanXj
