I'm ready to move on this thing so I can get my COP harness done too.

 

Where is the best/most cost effective place to to score an Ignitek TCI? Last I read it has to come from across the pond. Anyone stateside have one or deal them?

 

Its -1 right now but it will be 50 by next week so I'm hoping to get some more of her doctored up.

I have one that I bought during Dingy's group buy complete with map sensor and programming files. I bought it as a back up for Big Red but never really used it. I paid 265 for it during the group buy. I'll take 2 for it.

Thats awesome!

 

Dingy just let me know he doesn't sell them anymore but he did send all the pics and specs for the battery box and mounting of everything. A major plus that I wont have to mess with a Vboost controller next year when I Vmaxize it. I bought resistors for my COPS but I guess I wont need them now that I can run the COPS directly. I'm stoked.

Dingy was very helpful after selling me one.. (I guess one of his last). I bought a programming connector with plans to experiment with the map but have not yet got around to it.. The bike just goes vrooom.

So you got it in case your old Tci took a crap and never needed it?.. My Tci would not advance my timing and so all the diodes, and caps, and even driver transistors (I think one went toast during all that) would not fix it. I assume you just replaced your diodes? A friend of mine was also having a time fixing his and ended up buying a parts bike for the Tci..

Actually, I never had TCI issues. Big Red ran like a scalded dog with the either original TCI or the Ignitech. I just felt that if the oem was actually working that there was no reason to change. I could only notice subtle performance differences between the two. I did install the Ignitech, used it for several hundred miles upload the newest program update.

 

One of the big advantages the Ignitech has is program-ability. I'm certain for those who are adding performance mod like cops, TBI, Vmax heads, cams, etc. the Ignitech would be a huge plus.

 

I have been aware and also mindful of the age of the motorcycle and availability of key components and I really didn't want to get caught with my pants down, especially far from home. I figured it was better have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Kinda like insurance. I didn't want to need one and find out that the supply dried up. Sometimes there's no substitute for fore-thought.

 

For me I have always viewed my love for the Venture as a good fortune in that I didn't have to spend 15, 20, 30,000 dollars for a machine of this caliber. So pre-spending was never an issue. I do however recognize that I am fortunate in this regard and that not all of our "Sisters and Brothers in Ventureland" are.

I'm pretty damn excited that Heather had one to part with. It was a whole lot easier, cheaper and faster than if I had to get one from wherever they come from. I would have been pressed to pay full price for one this month because my AVR shat the bed and I sure cant live without one of those. I keep forgetting that they dont last 50 years anymore.

 

The early Japanese TCI/ECU modules having bad caps and randomly a few other semiconductors is widespread. My 96 Lexus LS400 had to have the caps replaced, my 88 Samurai (has ECU, harness and engine from a 95 Sidekick) also had to replace caps. Glad the internet exists or I never would have thought of that, I always thought ECUs either worked or they dont but apparently it's not that simple. These are two vehicles among hordes of others in this era that had the issue, it even spread to some other electronics in that era. It was around the late 90s that better batches of caps were being used. If one of those nasty ass caps leaks enough it can destroy the PC board and render the ECU non repairable. I'm not sure to what degree it effects our bikes but it was an issue for plenty of other mid 80s - late 90s Japanese vehicles.

I got mine from dingy. Like you i was going to play with the map. But it runs so awesome I'm afraid of messing it up.

Our ECUs do not have a known issue with caps, BUT there is a well documented issue with 8 diodes on the PC board, If any one of the diodes fails it will fry the main processor and since that processor is a programmed chip and there is no access to the program on it, it is then irreparable. The diodes give no warning of getting ready to fail. The diodes fail due to corrosion, they can be visually inspected, if they show any corrosion they need to be replaced ASAP. This is not a difficult repair to do, but every first gen should have it done to prolong the life of the ECU.

I'm glad to know, I think once I have mine off I'll have a look and maybe just replace them. I suppose I'll shelve it for a spare, or until someone (like I did here) comes out in need looking for one. I feel pretty fortunate that Heather had exactly what I was looking for and let it go for a super price, I think I should be prepared to pay that one forward.

From what I remember looking at the Tci traces and ohming it out, i think the diodes are there to protect the output transistors. Almost all my diodes had corroded to pieces yet my Tci still fired on all cylinders (it just didn't advance and I don't know why)..

I pulled out the battery box and coil/TCI rack yesterday to ditch the coils and harvest the pigtails for the COP harness.

 

Once the coils are out the TCI fits quite beautifully between the coil mounting towers. I think there may even be room in there for a pneumatic horn compressor.

Yes I didn't even think about mounting my horn compressor there... But Casey not trying to be know it all or pushy but you need to keep the electronics from in there. The corrosion is evil 👿!!

Wow, I was just thinking "is this guy some sort of pushy know it all?" :rasberry:

 

I see that it's not sealed up very well, you make a great point. I thought about on top of the air box as I've seen pics of it there. But... after I put the Vmax top end on I'm going to use air correctors and make a K&N filter lid for the Venture air box rather than using the Vmax air box, so putting anything above it would be temporary.

 

I'm glad you mentioned this, I do find myself riding in nasty weather sometimes. All the Harley guys hiding in rest areas and under overpasses might be onto something, I just keep on going and let the bike (and myself) get soaked. I guess I better find a high and dry place to locate this thing. I'll have to get the carbs and air box back on to see if there is room on the side of the air box.

Heck I had trolled this thread a year before I ever joined up and I just didn't think it would fit, I do have a good one for you with all that where the airbox is wouldn't you be able to mounth the TCI on the side of the battery box? On a side not If I can mount my compresser there I think I will try to shrink wrap the wires to the connections, Man these bike horns are gonna be loud!!!

I'm comfortable mounting a compressor there but I'm not taking any chances on the Ignitek. Thought about a weather tight condom or sealed box but easier to just mount it high. I'll have to see if these electric horns are loud enough and if I have an extra air horn laying around. I have one going on the Vmax but I think thats it for air.

Yeah If I could get away with it I would move my coils... Or figure out a way to weather proof them better, I have a set of 150db I was just racking my brain trying to figure out where I could place the compressor. Then you mentioned that spot, Hot damn thats it right in that little cubby where my TCI used to be.

It looks like a perfect place to mount it. I also use heat shrink tubing, solder and I whore out the dialectric grease too.

 

I have a pair of aftermarket electric horns, Hellas or something like that. I'll see if those are loud enough. If I need more loud I'll snag some air horns. Once the TCI and coils are gone that space is easier to access. I think a cylindrical compressor would be a snap to mount there, a couple hose clamps and a couple pieces of rubber and I'll bet it would lay right in there between the coil mounting provisions where I wanted to put my TCI, before you came along and totally ruined it for me, thanks for that haha.
