Kretz Posted December 2, 2016 #1 Posted December 2, 2016 So I use Rotella T6 & keep an eye on prices for when (if) it goes on sale. Today was in my local Canadian Tire & they have 5L jugs of T6 5W-40 on sale at 39.95+tax (Regular $47 & change +tax) A couple of shelves below are six 5USgal (18.9 L) drums of T6 marked at $69.95. So I thought that's a deal, so I took a 5 USG drum to the checkout. That's $147 (& change) says the checkout girl. I said no it's sale marked at $69.95 Well she said it's coming up at 139.95 plus tax. So I called for a manager, after checking he says it's the 15W-40 that is $69.95 & we don't have that in stock. "Someone" must have moved that one drum or put it in the wrong place, (while he looks accusingly at me) I said there are SIX drums all in that same shelf location all marked on the shelf at $69.95. He refused to honor the shelf sticker saying "things always get moved around" that's retail. By the time we left the store he had the "auto dept" staff moving the SIX drums to a different location priced at $139!
Kretz Posted December 2, 2016 Author #3 Posted December 2, 2016 (edited) For CT does that surprise you? No I guess not, but many stores will honour a mis-priced item when you point it out & then re-price it. Wow! just been checking around (out of interest) Amazon.ca Cd$57 for a 1 gallon jug Amazon.com $US66 (so around Cd$86) for 3x1 gal jugs. Welcome to Canada Eh? I have seen it as low as US$21/ gallon Edited December 2, 2016 by Kretz
SilvrT Posted December 2, 2016 #4 Posted December 2, 2016 I would have taken a picture of it and gone over their heads. A few years back Home Depot had a Drill Press on sale and the sale tag said it also included the Vise (that thing you set on the plate to hold a small piece). Even had a picture showing it. So I bought it. Got home, unpacked it .... no vise!! Went back to the store, asked a clerk about it, he got the manager (meanwhile I took a pic on my cell of the display ad). They phoned somewhere and then said that was wrong, it did not include a vise, and immediately took down the sign. I said well, too bad, I have a pic of that ad and you need to honor it. ABout 2 weeks later I got my vise shipped from the manufacturer to my door!
Kretz Posted December 2, 2016 Author #5 Posted December 2, 2016 Not certain but I believe Canadian Tire stores are franchised, I spoke to THE manager - (owner?) of the store so I felt that was as far as I could go. He did offer me a "deal" but even that was twice the wrongly advertised price. so I just left.
djh3 Posted December 3, 2016 #6 Posted December 3, 2016 $40 a gallon for oil???? Wholy crap a barrel of oil is under a hundred bucks aint it? How come a $22 bottle of oil is almost twice? Ever think about ordering online?

Ever think about ordering online? Yep! That's about the size of it but don't forget that's Canadian $$$ & that's $40 on sale! Regular is $47 & change PLUS tax! I've often heard from guys south of the border that T6 is "20 bucks a gallon" here we get 5 Liter jugs so a bit more than a US gallon (3.78 liters) but even if you do the sum for the "extra" & take into account the exchange rate it should still only be around Cd$36 not Cd$47. We get screwed with all sorts of things like that. Don't even think of looking at stuff like Motul Synthetic. Crazy prices. I do shop online & cross border but often freight charges bump up the cost again. Often we just have to "suck it up & quit whining" which I'll now do! LOL
djh3 Posted December 3, 2016 #8 Posted December 3, 2016 Yea I know some of the stuff for you all get prices jacked up pretty good. I had a buddy up there I raced online with. He needed some PC parts. Parts to him was going to be like $50 or something, He bought them had them shipped to me. Then I mailed them to him from here and it still saved him like 15 bucks. Just stupid sometimes. If you were close to the border and it was worth your time you should just pop over and pick it up and take back.

Well worth the trouble when online retailers offer free shipping in the lower 48.

Well worth the trouble when online retailers offer free shipping in the lower 48. There's two of them but the one I use is Hagens of Blaine. Don't know the name of the other one. It costs $5 US for each delivery unless you buy an annual membership for $22.50. Then it's only $2.50 each time. You can also ship stuff from there.

They had a store front in Oroville, WA. I'm pretty sure they have outlets in the lower mainland too. Same as Hagens, it was $5.00 to get any reasonably sized item delivered there. I was only 60 kms from the border so it was always worth it for me to have things shipped there instead of paying the shipping to Canada. I always declared the item at the border and never had an issue and never was charged any duty or extra taxes. Only way to go if you live close to the border in my view. Doug

We do use "Ship Happens" in Sumas, as it's only 20km from home (there are four or five receiver/shippers there) They charge $4 (US or Cdn). Which I think if very fair. (Shopping was great when our $ was at par, not so much now at $1.35) Customs occasionally ding us for additional tax/ duty but most times they don't. Border wait times can often be a PITA. I remember one time my wife saw a m/c jacket here in Canada, it was an end of line, the dealership only had one but it was too small. They couldn't order one in her size. Cost was $396 (our $ was at par then) I found the identical jacket in my wife's size (brand new at a dealer in NY) on flea bay $105!!! She got the jacket! We had that shipped to Sumas, declared it & didn't get dinged! Edited December 4, 2016 by Kretz

If its once in awhile, it probably more of a PIA than its worth for them.

If its once in awhile, it probably more of a PIA than its worth for them. The border guards probably don't bother with lower priced items particularly motorcycle parts which do not have duty on them because of lineups in the office. I almost always get to pay the tax when getting parts shipped through customs. There is never a lineup when I'm doing it but they sometimes don't bother when the tax is below $15 or so. Could be just the luck of the draw but probably the the PITA factor is the most prevalent reason.
