jlh3rd Posted April 18, 2008 #1 Posted April 18, 2008 i've got an 07 venture that i tried to install the tri-star brake/running light module on. i found a harness under the seat that had 5 wires in it, blue, yellow, brown,dk. green and black......when testing these wires they corresponded to the tailight (blue), ...brake light (yellow),.... LT. turn (brown), ....Rt. turn (Dk. green) .....and ground ( black).....i made all the connections, tried it, everything worked.....turned the bike off...key off........and the rear turn signals were on, not blinking...just on...............is this the right harness......anyone have any experience with this module.........i spent all day on this...even went down to yamaha, got yamaha connectors so i could wire the module and plug it in....(i know how to disconnect the wires from the plug)........so i'm gett'in frustrated.....i have the yamaha service manual, and, i gotta say, it's on of the worse service manuals i ever seen when it comes to the wiring diagrams..........
nickle Posted April 18, 2008 #2 Posted April 18, 2008 hey i have my trailer lights wired there and no problem. does that mol. have a hot wire that feeds it. like a relay. if so it's back feeding. just a thought never put one on mine.
1sttenor Posted April 18, 2008 #3 Posted April 18, 2008 I'd agree with Nickle's thought, at least to start with. That also where my trailer pigtail is wired.
nickle Posted April 18, 2008 #4 Posted April 18, 2008 hey again i had to check my clymer service manual. it to shows the same color diagam for lights. may be put the ground if you need on for that seperate. to stop back feeding. just guessing.
jlh3rd Posted April 18, 2008 Author #5 Posted April 18, 2008 nickle.....yeh, there is an orange wire that is supposed to feed from the battery........are you saying i don't need that connected..... about the ground.......i tried that.. i disconnected the black wire from the module to the harness and wired it directly to the battery post....no change..... what's crazy, is that the only wire that is hot when you turn the key on is the blue (tailight) wire.....which is not even connected to the module at all.......
nickle Posted April 18, 2008 #6 Posted April 18, 2008 sorry not getting back sooner. hey i am not a expert at wiring but have played with mine. i do think now is in a wire at light socket wire might be crossed or so where at light bulb. ussually that means it is back feeding. unplug your orange wire than try. than unplug others one at time with orange wire hook to see which one. just guessing now. i am courous though. i enjoy the battle some times to find out why its doing that.
jlh3rd Posted April 18, 2008 Author #7 Posted April 18, 2008 so, the harness connection that i'm using is the correct one.............i should add that i also added the stebel horn using the bracket sold on this sight.......yes i used the relay ..........i mounted the neg. battery cable and the neg horn. wire on top of this bracket and then bolted it down.........is it possible that is my problem...not getting a good ground there......
Pilot Posted April 18, 2008 #8 Posted April 18, 2008 Whats the model # of the Tri-Star module you are installing? I think you have it wired incorrectly but I'm not sure which module you are installing? Once I know this I can tell you which wire goes where.
jlh3rd Posted April 18, 2008 Author #9 Posted April 18, 2008 got it.........turns out , the instructions were wrong......there's an orange power lead that the instructions say should be connected to a 12v power source.....the diagram leads you to believe that should be the battery......nope, it needs to be connected to a switched power source.........so, it's connected to the tailight.........everything works so if anyone else installs this module, connect the orange power lead to a 12v switched source also, if someone wants to take the time, by using yamaha connector pins, you can make this a "plug in " installation...... model is the "xp"........i didn't use the blinker module thanks for everyone's input and this stebel horn is LOUD !
Pilot Posted April 18, 2008 #10 Posted April 18, 2008 Yup, that's where it goes. Now you can go ride....
nickle Posted April 18, 2008 #11 Posted April 18, 2008 glad you got it fixed. the horn is loud .i have one too. be safe
