baylensman Posted November 4, 2016 #1 Posted November 4, 2016 (edited) I don't know about you all, but I find myself yelling at the TV set more and more, especially during commercials! First off there must be over 100 different classes of pickup truck, every singel one regardless of MFG claims to be NUMBER ONE in its class for any one of a dozen different things, mileage, carrying capacity, towing, seating more freaking cup holders !!!!!. I'm a car guy I'll admit I lean a little towards the Blue Oval but, Chevy truck commercial tearing up Ford for the aluminum bed. Okay if you are attacked by a bear climb in the steel cage, but if you gottat carry that summabeach up a mountain, which would you rather haul on your back? A commercail showing a DODGE dually going through some mud while other trucks are stuck, then the next commercail for Viagra of all things shows the same truck stuck in the mud and the driver gets out and uses mules to get the truck out, somehow that equates to sexual performance. Which leds us to Boner pill commercials. I've never sat outside in a bathtub holding hand with my girlfriend while she sits in a matching tub watching the sunset! Now if the put girls with bigger chests and short skirts back in the pick-up truck commercials We wouldn't need so many boner pills. Speaking of pills. whats with fiber/laxative ads? Is everyone full of shi$? Mattress commercials. Foam guys yelling at the camera that thir mattress is scientifaclly proven to give a better nights sleep, the next dang commercail has a guy and gal sleeping on a bed with violins playing while the overdub whispers that their innerspring is guaranteed to give you a better nights sleep. Oh and the Prius commercials AAAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHH. I don't care how quick it feels but a cop in a Mustang or a Camaro or a Charger will run circles around the prius, with the tires smoking while they do it. Cruise ships. Not one of thosing lying mother F$%$#%RS every shows 30 people stagering off the boat puking their guts out because of food poisoning! Also can we stop with the trendy booze please!!! Apple flavored bourbon, Cinnamon whiskey, Marshmellow Vodka? Will Drinking this get me anything? If I can get somebody else to drink it maybe. Edited November 4, 2016 by baylensman
Sailor Posted November 4, 2016 #2 Posted November 4, 2016 I have quit watching live tv. If I want to see a show I record it then watch it the next day and skip the commercials.
BigLenny Posted November 4, 2016 #3 Posted November 4, 2016 Baylensman, That is hilarious! But very true! The worst at this crap is the car business. Ads like "Sales Tax Paid". The sales tax are never paid by anybody but you. EVER! I spent 10 years in the car business, so trust me when I say that. The sales tax are preloaded into the cost for the dealership so they will have enough clearance in the deal to pay your taxes. If they don't preload the tax cost they can't pay your taxes. Other ads they say "Free 10 Year Warranty" or even "Lifetime Warranty". These are never free!!!!!! You are paying for the warranty in your deal. The dealer buys extended warranties from various extended warranty companies, and then they add the cost of that warranty to their cost line on the car. What this means is; they can't discount the car as much because their cost is higher because they've added the warranty and taxes or whatever into the cost for that vehicle. I could go on and on about the car business lying in their ads. Because I've been in the business, my wife and I laugh heartily whenever we hear one the bogus ads on the radio or TV. The hard truth is, a vast majority of us Americans are suckers.
MikeWa Posted November 4, 2016 #4 Posted November 4, 2016 All I can say about those boner pill commercials is those women want me. They really do. They can't help themselves. I can tell. Mike
BlueSky Posted November 4, 2016 #5 Posted November 4, 2016 Commercials are intended to get our attention even if it means aggravating us or making us angry. I'm so thankful for the "mute" button. I understand that now 18 minutes of every tv hour is commercials, more than it used to be.
Dragonslayer Posted November 4, 2016 #6 Posted November 4, 2016 I've often said if I were ever elected president, (won't happen). The first thing I would do is outlaw commercials on tv. Then the most common response I get back is "that's how the make their money." I call b.s. Comcast currently has 22.3 million tv subscribers. If each of them pay an average of $100 per month that is $2,230,000,000 per month in gross revenue. How much does it cost to play old reruns over and over and over again. Then consider advertisements cost $450,000 per minute and there are roughly 14 advertisements minutes per hour (25% of your viewing time per hour), per channel. Let's see that means there are 336 ad minutes per day times $450,000= $151,200,000 ad revenue per day..... per channel. I'm sick of being bombarded with ads and crappie programming. I'm ready to shoot the idiot box and find something to do outside. Just think if everyone did that just think how much better the world would be... More exercise Less obesity Less desensitized violence More money in the bank Less gluttonous materialism As I always said the world would be a much better place to live if more people thought like me.
cowpuc Posted November 4, 2016 #7 Posted November 4, 2016 One nice thing about it,,, we can always push that little off button and go riding... IMHO,, riding doesnt have near the commercials.. Unless you happen to stop for gas at one of these new fangdangled stations with the pumps that have a built in TV in them with the commercials playing there too.. ,,, even when that has happened to me though it just makes me down right happy that my bike only holds 5 gallons of gas so its not that bad
CaseyJ955 Posted November 4, 2016 #9 Posted November 4, 2016 (edited) Annoyance is the main tactic for advertising, repetition and use of humor at the small end. I get so annoyed by it that I have done the following. I fired Direct TV, not only tons of poor quality programs but seriously over priced service and a heavy surplus of soul crushingly annoying ads, many are downright insulting to my intelligence. I was paying for that! I cut that cord and dismissed my landline at the same time and went with ooma. Those two moves saved me over $250/month. Now I have basic stand alone internet for $38/month. Ooma for $4 and Netflix for $11, which is ad free. I wont even use Hulu, even their plus service has ads and I will tolerats 0 advertising now. Besides with internet only its easy just to type in watch __________ online free and your there, ad free. I watch what I want, when I want and NEVER tolerate ANY ads, ever. I feel that with all the ads that come with cable TV it should be free, but once you pay $50-$250 every month you should absolutely not be annoyed by ads in the comfort of your own home. Am I wrong? It doesnt matter, its the way things are so I just vote with my wallet and encourage others to explore alternatives as well. The other thing I do is when im in my car I never ever tune into terrestrial radio, its as annoying as TV. I have an old 96 Lexus LS400 which is old enough to be pre-blutooth by a decade. With an oem CD changer in its own glovebox I ripped 6 decent CDs of what I like, than I installed a Bluzit bluetooth thingy in the antenna lead so I can link my phone and listen to my enternet show or listen to my flac library. The bluetooth thing was $70, I have one in my Samurai too. Point being I save a significant amount of money every month, thousands a year! literally! I savor a 100% advertising free existence and listen to/watch what I want when I want. Its blissful my brothers and sisters. I only had to buy and install a couple bluetooth thingies in my well aged vehicles and life is pretty grand! We dont even need to make it illegal, we only need to stop participating. It feels good, like a big middle finger to the annoyances many accept as just the way it is. Sorry this is so long but I feel that aside from the significant bundles of cash I save and overwhelming amount of annoyance completely eliminated from my life was well worth it. Im only sorry I waited as long as I did. Go ahead and put another $120/ month on the pile by firing Verizon and putting wife and I on month to month cricket. Who would have ever thought that being cheap could give a guy such a boost in quality of life? Its a windy post but its a highly effective way to counter the problem and save a buttload of scratch in so doing. Good times!!! Oh yea, we have a couple gas pumps thst shove advertising as we fill, I dont go to those pumps, instead I use the older stations so I can fillup in tranquility. Edited November 4, 2016 by CaseyJ955
Venturous Randy Posted November 4, 2016 #10 Posted November 4, 2016 I walked into an Arby's and looked at the picture on the wall and said; "I want a sandwich that looks just like that". The guy behind the counter turned and looked at the picture and said; "Yeah, me too". Randy

snyper316 Posted November 5, 2016 #12 Posted November 5, 2016 I have quit watching live tv. If I want to see a show I record it then watch it the next day and skip the commercials. I do the same darned thing I hate commercials they are utterlly frigging stupid now there is like 2 or 3 Which I like because they are either that damned stupid there laughable. I can't even begin to name them right now I have a migraine from hell right now. Another thing that grinds my gears Last Month I went to wal mart bought some tea bags and they were 5.98 went in yesterday and they got on there Was 7.48 now just 5.98. I threw them back on the shelf and left... They do this crap all the time. It annoys the piss out of me. Now I can remember the commercials its the ones that Farmers run with the dogs having a swim party. He called it the mermut then there is the Hot Dog that stole the pizza.
Sailor Posted November 5, 2016 #13 Posted November 5, 2016 There is a store here that advertises 10% Tuesday, ten percent off everything. We were having a BBQ so on Monday I went in and got some ribs. The wife invited more people so I went back on Tuesday and got some more. The price had gone up by 10%. Just out of curiosity I went back on Wednesday and the price had gone back down by 10%

In fact... I'll tell you what... if you suffer from ED raise your hand. It's ok. This is a really common issue. Go ahead, you can do it, raise your hands." Still no Hands go up. BlueSky Posted November 5, 2016 #16 Posted November 5, 2016 I had the pleasure of visiting a lady who lived in England whom I met while she was in the USA visiting relatives. Anyhow, this was about the year 2000. She said the BBC controlled the tv and everyone had to pay about $500/year/tv if I remember correctly to get the broadcast. We do have the option of going to an outside antenna in some places anyway. I have a buddy who lives in the UP of MI and he installed an antenna with signal booster and he gets over 40 channels for free. Then he pays for a slow speed internet that barely meets his needs and $100/year for a cell phone. I'm paying $189/month for tv and internet and $99/month for two cell phones. I could learn from him.

As mentioned above, the first thing I will do in the advertising world is make fast food chains use actual pictures of the steaming piles of refuse they serve rather than the delectable entrees they currently have pictured.

Kretz Posted November 5, 2016 #20 Posted November 5, 2016 (edited) Back to TV ad's... Here in BC Canada we have what is effectively "government insurance" (actually a crown corp'n) that is required to tip up millions of $$$$ per year to the provincial government (of whatever colour or political persuasion) Over the next three fiscal years this is predicted to be in the region of $480 million of “excess optional capital”. We have no choice, our 3rd party insurance must be purchased from our Provincial Insurer at whatever extortionate rate they decide is appropriate. There is NO competition! Currently I pay around $1000 for my 3rd party mandatory insurance. In recent years we have been allowed to place our "optional" insurance (ie collision & comprehensive) with private companies & I pay another $300 for optional part (to an excellent private insurer). Here's the rub... we regularly see TV ad's telling us that our Provincial Insurance company will look after us & how they are our "friend" in the event of an accident. They are not. They are a business that exists solely to make a profit. Currently they are running an ad many times a night trying to convince us that they (& we) are being defrauded to the tune of millions of $$$$ per year. It shows a guy out mountain biking while his friend who's at work talks to him on the phone, & goes something like this:... Friend: Just wondering if you've recovered from your car crash yet? Bike Rider: Na! I'm currently at physio, the doc has given me another week. Friend: You do realize that you sent today's ride video to everyone! Rider: What do you mean - everyone? Friend: Everyone that thinks you were injured in that car crash, not cool man not cool! The ad then goes on to say how insurance fraud is costing us all millions $$$$$, & asking people to contact them is they are aware of anyone who may be defrauding them. The truth is, while I'm sure there are fraudulent claims made, everyone who claims in an accident is treated as a liar & a cheat from the word go & subjected to grossly invasive scrutiny by the Provincial insurance company. Every year insurance rates increase (they never decrease). The Insurance Company has to go before a commission to justify the increases. They were asked by the commission exactly how much of their business is subject to fraudulent claims. Their answer??? Their current system does not allow them to isolate or quantify claims that may be fraudulent, so one has to ask.... WTF is their current advert all about? & how much is being spent by this gov't run monopoly to persuade us that we're all liars & cheats. ps. sorry the post is so long Edited November 5, 2016 by Kretz

My girlfriend as of current pays 250 to 300 a month depending if there is five weeks or not. Before this "Affordable Care act" she was paying right around $130 a month. Now while it was cheaper she would go to Dr. Or a Hospital the copay for Doc was like $25 for in Network and $30 for out of network, The hospital topped out at $400. Now it cost her $45 In network and $65 out of network. The Hospital well she has just gotten 3 seperate bills for an emergency room visit one is $860, the other is $400, some seperate thing for $1300. Sounds like where the USA is headed. Sir come on this is AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE!!! Everyone will be able to afford insurance. It will be just like Canada and where else did the Pres. say owell can't remember. They need to overhaul the really messed up system, maybe I am off my rocker here but I think it should work like car insurance, the less you use it the less you pay for it. But I do not feel we should be fined for not having it. I do think we would get off cheaper just paying the fine and paying cash when she needs to go. Oddly enough, When I took her to the hospital before the bill was one bill and for $600 this was before her insurance kicked in. Mind you both times were for the same thing, I think she got gauze the last visit tho. Back to commercials and pure annoyance I have 15 missed calls. I did answer one call today and it was a recording pleading with me that we need to continue his legacy and vote a certain way for the next governor so the Affordable Care Act he worked so hard to get into law continues to do Great Things and help people Like me get the medical attention I need, only reason I answered it is because I have a good friend in New London, Mo.

If your in the USA you have nothing to worry about. As luck would have it, one of our candidates is actually going to expand the Affordable Care Act, ya know, because it has been such a success so far. Now everyone has "affordable healthcare". I knew when this was unveiled there was no possible way it could go wrong. Oh, by the way, those of you that are victims of this horrendous dumpster fire and are facing the fine for going without insurance, google and research the exemptions, there are many. Also their collection of the totally fair and reasonable fine for not buying their product is fairly hollow. When is General Motors going to be able to fine me for not buying their crappy products, is that next? They can remove it from your refund but if your accountant is going his job your not getting a refund anyway, your withholding is adjusted so that you will write a small check at the end of tax season. Dont pay that fine without exhausting every possible option first and having that conversation with your lawyer or a REAL accountant. Skip the place in the mall or H&R Block types of places and latch onto a true professional. I hope the connotation of heavy sarcasm was apparent in my text. But I was serious about the avenues for dodging that stupid unjust unfair absurd fine. I remember the stateside advertisements boasting this, haven't seen so much now that seemingly most of the USA is fuming over this tragic mess.

I have good friend who couldn't get insurance before and I avoid the insurance subject. Anyway I know there is ways around it.I wasn't sure this year tho since she got a raise. Didn't want to take the chance. I also know the people at H&R Block are lazy two years ago we had to pay the fine which didn't make sense since neither of us worked the whole year. I usually do our taxes, When your looking at quite a bit back and then all the sudden they come back and tell you well that will be $782.00 please, I have some other friends they go to H&R Block every year around this time of year to get a loan due to mispending, then back to H&R Block for them to file there taxes. They say so they can get them back faster. Every year I file electronically and every year we get ours a couple days before they do sometimes a week before. Told them if they want to pay someone they could give me $100.00 And I would file it for them. But every year they turn me down and pay like $500 to have H&R do it then pay the anti audit fee. Whatever As long as I can do numbers and I can see and read I will continue to do ours.
