Just got my 01 Venture last weekend. Rode at night for the first time and realized how bad the windshield is. Is there a way to restore it? I've heard you can use lemon pledge furniture polish, but I'm not touching it with anything unless I'm sure it won't get worse.

It sort of depends upon which shield it is. If it's the stock shield, you may actually be able to polish out any scratches and etc. with some like they use to restore headlight covers but it may actually ruin the shield. Stock shields have a film that will be removed if you polish out the scratches. That may make it OK for a while but it will scratch much easier and won't last long.

If its that bad you can remove the film Freebird mentioned by using some strong tape, press it on the outside of the shield and pull it off, the film coating should come with it. Then use a 2 step plastic polish then several coats of a hard wax on it. When you clean a clear windshield always wipe up & down , never in circles or across because it will diffuse the light and blind you.

Chances are it's the original shield and if it is then it's 15 years old! Tome to replace IMHO. Two very good replacement shield manufacturers are Clearview, and F4 Customs (my personal favorite). Both offer a variety of sizes and options, and you can save yourself a little money purchasing one of their "Blems" which have very minor imperfections that you most likely won't even notice unless pointed out to you.

Depending on just what you like or don't like in a shield there is also a "convertible" shield made by Baggershield that is a two piece affair that converts from a short shield to a taller shield. There seems to be mixed reviews on them here, most like them, some do not, after purchasing.

Stock shields are overpriced for the quality, or lack thereof, IMHO. Look in the "Vendors" forum for discounts for Venturerider members for Clearview, F4, and Baggershield...

Try some peanut butter... Use it like rubbing compund.... may remove some of the scratches and fogging... follow that up with a good leather moisturizer...

I recently got tired of my stock RSV windshield. Just too tall and too many blemishes. Then I got some horrible spots on a recent trip to the Grand Canyon during two days of rain. So I took Colgate toothpaste (a mild abrasive), wet a paper towel and, after four applications, got all the spots out. Then I took a serious look at the shield and realized it needed replacing.

I ruled out the better ones because of cost, and went with the shortest Slipstreamer, which 13 inches. $68.13 cents including tax and shipping at Motorcycle Superstore. It is a beautiful windshield with no flaws. It is a Dupont acrylic, which means it is not as tough as Polycarbonate. So I ordered a bottle of Blue Ribbon Products Plexi-Clean Acrylic Plastic Cleaner for seven bucks. Hopefully this will keep it clean and damage free.

Yes heavy scratch removal will go through the film. Did that in a couple places on my scratched 99 stock shield. Still using it 2,000 miles later. Tried the "shorter" bagger shield, not for me, the dark lower part blocked too much "close to the bike" from view it was too loud for me up or down, not much rain protection. Like riding looking through shield, well not really but sure like the quiet that a tall shield gives. Ran one of the wider shields liked it, but the one I used had a light tint and I hate tinted shields. looking at the $80 19" tall shields on fleabay, maybe next year.
