stanG Posted September 21, 2016 #1 Posted September 21, 2016 Well after 6 years of riding to work in the dark and a couple near missed it finally happened. Tuesday morning I saw one cross in front of me up the road so I had slowed down to about 25mph looking for more. Then the next thing is I'm down off the left side. Didn't see the deer, didn't feel it. The rest was slow motion. Slide, roll, slide, roll, stop. The whole time I can see the bike sliding along next to me sparks flying off the crash bars. I layed there for a split second assessing my injury situation. I knew I lost some skin on my knees and left arm. Everything else ok. The bike had stalled but was laying on it side lights on radio playing. This was 4:45am and not a car in sight, not even a headlight. I decided to pick the bike up and assess the damage. Left footpeg and shifter bent pretty bad but functional. So I jumped on, got it started and rode the remaining six miles to work. Called the boss and told him I was heading to emergency. Bottom line... Road rash on both knees and a pretty good spot on my left arm plus a sprained foot. Really lucky. Jacket was a lifesaver. Helmet doesn't have a mark on it. (And yes, I was wearing it)
Backinthesaddle Posted September 21, 2016 #2 Posted September 21, 2016 I can't imagine what your arm would look like if you did not have a jacket on. This is my wake up call. I always wear my helmet and gloves, but I am pretty slack on wearing my jacket. Heal up quickly
slowrollwv Posted September 21, 2016 #3 Posted September 21, 2016 Ouch! That will be sore for a while. Looks like the bike got as much rash as you did. I wear my helmet but like others I usually wear a light jacket and it would shred like skin if I would go down.
ragtop69gs Posted September 22, 2016 #4 Posted September 22, 2016 Them four legged creatures have a way of surprising you when you least expect it. Sorry to hear of the injuries to body, bike and ego. Nothing a little time and $$ won't heal. Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
rpep1982 Posted September 22, 2016 #5 Posted September 22, 2016 Man! Glad you are okay. Hang tough, that road rash sucks when it is healing.
Motiv Posted September 22, 2016 #6 Posted September 22, 2016 Yikes! Heal well. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
mirider Posted September 22, 2016 #7 Posted September 22, 2016 Sorry to hear this Stan....hoping you and the bike are healed and back on the road soon. Have hit a deer with a car, don't ever want to try it on a bike. [emoji33] Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
djh3 Posted September 22, 2016 #8 Posted September 22, 2016 Dang man. Glad for the most part your OK. I use to heal pretty quick. Now days I'd bee months healing up a scrape like that.
Yammer Dan Posted September 22, 2016 #9 Posted September 22, 2016 Know this morning is worse than yesterday. Take it slow but move all you can. Heal fast!!
Condor Posted September 22, 2016 #10 Posted September 22, 2016 That arm sure looks familiar... I haven't had any hair growth on my right thigh for 50 years. Ground all the hair follicles off sliding thru an intersection on my right side and asset. Pre ATGATT. T-Shirt, Burmuda shorts, and sandals.. Took months before the thick scabs finally sluffed off. The first couple days, every time I bent my leg the scab would crack and bleed making the scab thicker. Hope you heal quickly. Don't pick at it!!!!!!
videoarizona Posted September 22, 2016 #11 Posted September 22, 2016 Whew, glad you are OK! I too can't imagine what the arm would look like if you weren't wearing the jacket. Kudos to you for the helmet as well! Wishing you fast healing and fun wrenching fixing the scoot! david P.S. I'm rethinking the idea of armor underware......wonder if I can handle the Arizona heat with it on...
XV1100SE Posted September 22, 2016 #12 Posted September 22, 2016 Glad it wasn't too bad for you. Heal quickly !
cecdoo Posted September 22, 2016 #13 Posted September 22, 2016 Sorry to hear about your slide, but glad it wasnt alot worse! Been there, you are gonna look like Col. Sanders extra crispy for awhile, loose fitting white cotton long sleeve shirts will help and lots of Aloe. All the best, Craig
mm482 Posted September 22, 2016 #15 Posted September 22, 2016 Praying that you will have a speedy recovery.
Carbon_One Posted September 23, 2016 #16 Posted September 23, 2016 Yep that'll smart for a while but sure glad it wasn't worse and you're still here to tell us about it. Praying for a quick recovery. Larry
dcryder Posted September 23, 2016 #17 Posted September 23, 2016 Heal quickly the bike can be fixed, I know I hit a deer myself on my bike and know how you feel.
BigLenny Posted September 23, 2016 #18 Posted September 23, 2016 Dude! Glad you're okay. But I gotta ask; what brand of riding jacket were you wearing??? That bad of a scrape isn't supposed to happen with a high quality jacket. I'd ditch the brand you're wearing. Hoping you heal fast. Big Lenny
adventurer 08 Posted September 23, 2016 #19 Posted September 23, 2016 Having a place in Sebewaing and riding on Van Dyke going north we Never ride in the low lite hours , we have had so many close calls. Heal well and get the bike ready for next year.
bongobobny Posted September 23, 2016 #20 Posted September 23, 2016 Stan, I may have a spare gold fairing in fair shape, better than what you now have, I'll check if you're interested. Glad you're OK, I know all about smacking a deer, Becky and I hit one with the RSV coming back from MD, we had the bike for 3 days and just put on it's first 500 miles! Did around $6000 damage but somehow I kept the bike upright but it did take about a 1/2 mile to finally stop...
stanG Posted September 23, 2016 Author #21 Posted September 23, 2016 Dude! Glad you're okay. But I gotta ask; what brand of riding jacket were you wearing??? That bad of a scrape isn't supposed to happen with a high quality jacket. I'd ditch the brand you're wearing. Hoping you heal fast. Big Lenny The jacket is a high quality jacket. The jacket leather was scraped but intact, not ripped up at all. The abrasion/burn came from inside the jacket. Some of the nylon mesh liner fabric is melted. I turned the sleeve inside out and found a good supply of my epidermis.
Flyinfool Posted September 23, 2016 #22 Posted September 23, 2016 So is that more of a burn on your arm than road rash?
vzuden Posted September 23, 2016 #23 Posted September 23, 2016 I have heard of some jacket manufacturers repairing or replacing jackets that have been involved in accidents. Might be worth checking into
stanG Posted September 23, 2016 Author #24 Posted September 23, 2016 I think it might be a combo of both. Fortunately the pain is manageable at least for now.
