Forks reinstall, any tips?

Hey folks, I finally had to fix something on the scoot. Fork seals, just like death and taxes. Any who, took em off had a guy rebuild em. Fixing cracks and stuff with "Q Bond" its like Plastix but i couldnt find that at the local AP store. New speakers, brakes, speedo cable. I'm thinking I should put a set of those ignition wires on her while the coils are right there. Other things I want to do I can get to after I put all the fairing stuff back on. So, Good idea to throw for new wires and caps? If someone on here sells those on ebay I'll get them from you. Thanks

Putting in the forks is pretty straightforward. I recently did mine and there were two fairly obvious things I got wrong. I did not notice the brake lines were behind the forks rather than in front. The other thing I missed is the right side air collar has a locator pin that fits into a slot on the backside of the upper triple clamp. Oil the o-rings inside the air collars before assembling.

I used Q-Bond before and it was OK but I found it difficult and expensive. I use a mixture of MEK and ABS now and find it works very well and is quite inexpensive. There are a few threads on the forum where I have described the process. If you have more questions about it don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks for that air seal tip. I just put some Lucas no slip in the van. And saved the bottle with a bit in it. Think I should put a little of that on em?

I put the new ebay wires and caps on the bike and yeah, thats was money well spent. #4 wire was green and bad coil input was dirty too. No wonder that cyl was not firing all the time.

Thanks Blue, I had a local bike shop redo them. I watched a bunch of vids to see if I felt like I could do it. But, I felt it was better to have a pro do it.

I should be back on the road by this afternoon.

The bike is running better than ever with the new wires and caps , air filter etc. I finaly put some cash into the bike and she sure did reward me.

I know the bike is running right when I hear that whining sound, to me its music to my ears.

My temp gauge is not working now, its flat lined at the bottom, any clues. Bike runs great, no overheating, but I bet no fan if she does get hot in traffic, till I get that thing working.

You probably accidently knocked the wire off of the temperature sensor, a very common thing to do. Just follow the radiator hose to the engine, you will find a housing that contains the temperature sensor, then look around for the wire close by just now dangling in free space. Don't ask why many of us know about that...

Cant find the wire....doh. Plus she had a little puddle under the waterpump. Its weeping a little over night. Stops as soon as i start her up. Stays dry all day.

I guess I'm doing the waterpump next. I did not see a sending unit either. Thanks for the help. I'll find it sooner or later.

The temperature gauge sender is on the right side and as I remember a little above the junction of the bottom of the right fairing half and the lower. You probably still have a working fan though.....it's controlled by a separate switch near the temperature sender.

Thanks Frank, I'll take a look at it again soon. Bikes running great, forks are holding air, feels nice and stable again. Wont stop raining now.....

Found it. I had to go to the shop manual to find it. Then it didnt work right, after fooling with it I got it to work. Yeah. Now I'm waiting on a speedo cable and she will be in the best shape in years.

Speaker I bought have NO bass to speak of. Way better than stock thou.

yup!!! In order to get good bass, you have to move a large volume of air, and to do that you need a larger surface area of the speakers. Those little 4" speakers just don't cut it!!

 

Better than stock 4" speakers DO give you improved mid range and high range response...

Ok, The bike has never runs this good. At times I had it close but ,she is purring like a kitten now. However with the new smoothness and power comes .... the whine. She is really loud now...lol

Plus, I'm going in and out of the corners a little more sporty than before. So its like a different bike now. Taking it easy and not getting into racing around, and god she loves the slab...

It's great you have solved the handling issues but Yamaha did not introduce the whine until they made the 2nd Gen. Hate to say it but something is not right.

I never did own a 1st Gen that didnt whine thru the gears up to about 3 grand.. Straight cut gears on the clutch drive maybe.. Sort of always reminded me of a gear driven supercharger

I've only owned two 1st Gen MkII's and neither of them whined. Is it a MkI thing?

May very well be Cammy,, I just finished off "Tweeks" for my 5th MK1 and am now started on number 6.. All MK1's and all did it.. Take a quick listen on this video.. Go to :38 and run thru :46 and you can clearly hear the whine I am referring to.. Same all the way thru the gears.. "Crud", my 89 Vmax did it too only he had Super Trapp pipes on him (loud) so the whine was not so easily hearable.. He was also a "1200" where your MK2's are/were 1300's.. Maybe some changes with the 1300 clutch/engine gears.. Dont know - never did have a 1300 I ran enough to give an opinion on that one..

Got that right Dog,, clocked over a million miles on em,, short shifting my way (#6, our latest pride n joy is our first one with the second gear repaired) to shear bliss and LOVING that beloved sound all the way!!

Could never get over how CHEAP you could find em on their way to scrap cause no second gear... One man's scrap is another man's glory I guess

Mine is the same, love that sound, like Half-Pipe said, similar to a supercharger. Reminds me of a vintage 60s Starship Enterprise hitting warp 3 as it's accelerating toward some rendezvous with Mudd's women!

Ok now I feel like a dimwitt I never noticed this whine in mine till recently after I installed my New to Me Mufflers. Thought it was cause I used that Wal*Fart Quick Silver oil. And Marie sounds just about like Tweeks. I thought maybe cause second gear was going but thanks for the post there Puc.
