garyS-NJ Posted September 7, 2016 #1 Posted September 7, 2016 I replaced my fork springs and now got a seal leak (probably always leaked when full, got the bike last year....). so I bought all balls seals but now wondering if I should put in new bushings as I've have been hunting down a high speed snake weave issue.. How much play is acceptable and/or can I inspect the bushings for wear? or just replace.. I have 25k miles on the odometer. these are the P/N's I have for bushings (odd boats.com doesn't list/show the lower bushings): 3JJ-23125-00-00 METAL,SLIDE 1 this is the top bushing that wears most. bottom bushing 3JJ-23171-00 Oh, and side note, when I put in the new progressive springs, I pulled out progressive springs with just the 1.5" PVC spacer, so that's all I installed, so I didn't have the oem 1" aluminum spacer. Memory fuzzy but is the sealing o-ring on the 17mm hex head plug or that 1" aluminum OEM spacer or both?? It hasn't been holding front air pressure since the spring replace (actually I just repaired the CLASS electronics and the Pump so I haven't really watched the front for leak down rate..

It is called "PISTON, front fork". Oh, and side note, when I put in the new progressive springs, I pulled out progressive springs with just the 1.5" PVC spacer, so that's all I installed, so I didn't have the oem 1" aluminum spacer. The 1983-1985 forks did not have that aluminum plug/slug or as Yamaha calls it "CAP". On the MKI there is spring, steel spacer stack and then the "BOLT, cap". Yes, the BOLT, cap should have an O-ring on it. O-ring PN: 26H-23147-00-00.
Patmac6075 Posted September 7, 2016 #3 Posted September 7, 2016 I did a complete front end rebuild over the winter, and it's like night and day....Do it once and do right, as long as you're in there....what's another $100? I'd hate to do all that work only to find the slides/Pistons are sloppy. I say change it all out...it worked for me.
MiCarl Posted September 7, 2016 #4 Posted September 7, 2016 You should replace bushings when you do seals. Even if they're not currently bad there is a good chance they'll be damaged on disassembly.
CaseyJ955 Posted September 7, 2016 #5 Posted September 7, 2016 You should replace bushings when you do seals. Even if they're not currently bad there is a good chance they'll be damaged on disassembly. I heeded this advice as it was offered in a thread I started. I got all of it from boats.net for something like $157 shipped. The OEM seals, dust cups, upper bushings and lower bushings, which are called pistons and that threw me off too. One thing I have learned on other bikes is to never use aftermarket fork seals. Im excited.to get mine together with the progressives and balls head bearings. Everything will be replaced and ill piece of mind. When I was riding mine home 300 mi after purchase and hit anything over 75mph it would start to vibtate and when I looked down through the fairing down the forks I could visually see them vibrating for and aft. Replacing the bushings, im in.
garyS-NJ Posted September 7, 2016 Author #6 Posted September 7, 2016 Thanks all. Ordering bushings tonight. Maybe dust caps will check them again Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
