brian aber Posted September 6, 2016 #1 Posted September 6, 2016 looking to buy a cdi unit for a 1986 1.3 venture??? any leads ???? big bucks on e bay $230 pluss!!!!! HELP
bongobobny Posted September 6, 2016 #2 Posted September 6, 2016 OK it's really a TCI (Transistor Controlled Ignition) not a Capacitor Discharge Ignition. Any TCI from an '84 thru '89 will work on your bike. No, even used they ain't cheap!! What several of us have done is convert to an aftermarket unit made by Ignitech. They have to be programmed with a computer initially, and have to be wired in. There was a thread a couple of months ago about some other company making plug and play aftermarket units, unfortunately I forgot to bookmark the website...
luvmy40 Posted September 6, 2016 #3 Posted September 6, 2016 This may be the one you're thinking of. http://www.regulatorrectifier.com/catalog/1984-1985-1989-Yamaha-XVZ12-Venture-1200-CDI-Ignitor Not exactly cheap either.
bongobobny Posted September 6, 2016 #4 Posted September 6, 2016 Yup, that's the critter, the Ignitech is cheaper setup though...

snyper316 Posted September 7, 2016 #9 Posted September 7, 2016 It would definitely solve the headache on 83's and I'm learning! Sent from my Z812 using Tapatalk
bongobobny Posted September 8, 2016 #10 Posted September 8, 2016 OK known fact, TCI's have more issues than working or not working. Some of them will start, but you rev them up and they sort of "fall off" causing breakup at higher RPM's. Ask Earl, I had a bunch of TCI's I sent to him about 6 years ago or longer. He tested each and every one of them in his bike and sent me detatiled notes on how they performed. A couple of them caused misfires with higher RPM's...
van avery Posted September 8, 2016 #11 Posted September 8, 2016 Just purchased one from IGNITECH for $222. Here is the contact info: ignitech@ignitech.cz Need to tell them what bike and year you have and they will send you infor and pricing. The package with the new TCI with the correct connectors to plug in to the bike , a CD with the correct program, the correct patch cord to connect to you computer. There is a small CD with the patch cord that you have to install on your computer to make the connection/patch cord work. Once you get it you need to put in in the bike and connect your computer to TCI on the bike The 12 volt from the bike powers the TCI so you can down load the programming to it. Here was the pricing I got the first of August for an 1985 :Royale I'm working on now: unit TCIP4 full version 88 149 USD connector adapter 6 USD freightage DHL 52 USD Useful accessories is USB/COM cable for connection to PC 15 USD Hope that helps. I would not purchase old TCI. I do have an 87 Royale that still runs fine on the original but who knows how long.
