NETFLIX Scam ... folks, this appears to be a new scam to get your CC info so DON'T fall for it. You'll get an email from what appears to be Netflix with subject "Action Required". In the body it says "We were unable to process your last payment. Please update your billing details to continue enjoying. To quickly resolve this issue, click: Log in to Netflix then you will be prompted to update your information. " DON'T DO IT !!

Never click on any links in emails similar to that. I used to get emails about updating my paypal and credit card info. I just transfer them to junk and then block them.

Biggest thing it to HOVER the cursor over the link and it should show the destination of the link. You can very quickly tell the link goes to a bogus site without having to click.

This goes for ANY credit card or account information. Very few legit companies will ever ask you to click a link in an email. They will tell you to go to the website and login as usual.

I just got a email from ebay to update my info because I had not updated anything in over a year.

It was an email with a box to click to log into my account.

My scam alert immediately sounded.

I forwarded the email to Spoof@ebay.com and got a reply back from ebay that it is a legit email from them.

Ebay said I can tell it is legit because it was addressed to me by name.

I have gotten scams that were addressed to me by name to so that is a pretty wimpy method of proving something is a scam vs legit.

I deleted it anyhow out of principal.

I understand but still won't do it. If I got that email, I would go to Ebay as I normally would and login from there.

 

Here is a PayPal story for you.

 

Years ago we had a member here who did our caps, shirts, etc. He worked for a company and offered a fair price and they did a good job. Part of the deal was that once he had sold a certain dollar amount, he would send us ...i don't remember...a dollar or two for each item sold. I got a phone call from him one day asking me if I had taken all the money out of his PayPal account. Of course I told him that there was no way that I could have because it was HIS account and I had none of the login info. He proceeded to tell me that he went to the account and all the money was gone. He later told me that he had received an email asking him to click on a link to verify that all his information was correct. He did so and of course somebody stole all the money in the account.

 

Many people have lost money in scams just like that. As stated above, you can hover over the link to see where it really leads but even they can be very deceptive at times. I recently got a link ate claimed to be from Microsoft. When I hovered over the link it was something like support.microsoft To a lot of people that would sound very legit but the fact is, it was in no way tied to Microsoft. A day or two later I got an email from my companies IT Department congratulating me on not clicking on that link. They actually sent it to all employees as part of some security test to determine what kind of training we all needed. Glad I didn't click it.

Yup once in a blue moon I get one from supposedly pay pal about updating info. I will normally go sign in to my account from a separate page, and see if there is in fact a message about updating anything.

Some of these jokers even if you click on the link and then you think "wait a dang minute here" They already go some bug installed rite then to track some info.

That is why if it look at all like it may possibly be legit I contact the company that sent it. I do NOT use any link in the email or a reply I call them using the phone number on my bill or on the back of a CC or their real web address that I would normally use to contact them.

 

As I mentioned I had one from ebay just this week that had scam written all over it but when I contacted them it was legit.

Sounds kinda like what happened to me Last year. The people called me saying they were gonna shut off my electric by the next busisness day. Problem is the Electric Company Does call you to do this. So I abliged and paid my $483.00 Electric Bill. Needless to say the following month the Electric Company does call to tell me that my electric is due to be shut off for Non-Payment. So I got a little mad at them and they told me there had been a scam going around which had been on the local news. I told the lady didn't think it was a scam; and looked thru my Caller Id and sure enough it had there name and phone number right there. She informed me that the people that do these things can somehow change there info on Caller Id to seem Legit. SO here is another scam going on People will call claiming to be IRS dude gave me badge number and all. Had me all panicking thinking the sheriff was gonna be coming to my door to arrest me. So I did call Dispatch and see if there was a warrant on me. He proceeds to tell me there is a scam going around; its not so much this time of year but really bad during tax time...

In our area scammers call and claim to be revenue Canada.

They say. Our records show you owe x amount of money that if not paid immediately will result in seizure of property or jail time.

What is hard to believe is the hey then instruct the sucker to purchase "ITunes" gift cards. They have them recite the code on the back and of course they get the money.

 

Its hard to believe that people are so stupid to think the government of Canada would demand payment in ITunes gift cards.

But, it is amazing how many have fallen for this!!!

Well what is shocker that it was actually something our electric company does. The other they demanded payment Via My Prepaid Emerald Card we use for taxes.. Told him that we no longer use it and he said well you will be arrested in the hour and hung up. Also before he demanded payment this way he was telling me; if I was arrested I would be paying 75,000 thousand dollar to be released, and if stayed in jail 10 days. I would be in court and Have to pay 375,000 dollars. That I could be also going to Federal Prison for a Maximum of 20 yrs. The Kicker of it all was the years he was claiming I made $300 mistake and did so 3 times.
