GoPro Question

I'm thinking about buying a GoPro camera. I THINK I want the Silver Hero 4 because it has the built in display. The Black is $100.00 more but does not have the built in display. The black will record 4k though whereas the silver only does 1080P. I don't think I care about the 4k and would rather have the built in display.

 

So....am I wrong?

I love my 4K tvs picture quality.

having a display on the camera makes it so much more convenient to use, and/or preview a vid.

4K will eat gigabits a lot faster than 1080p. How much shoot time can each one give?

File sizes will be massive, will this make a difference to you for uploading or transferring the files?

After reading up a bit, the 4K GoPro can use your phone via bluetooth or WiFi as the monitor, you can even control all functions of the camera from your phone.

I have to vote for the 4K.

I still think I like it better on the camera. I also KNOW that 4K is going to result in huge file sizes. I'm pretty sure I will go with the Silver. I've got a chance to buy one at 40% off and I haven't seen any deals that good on them anywhere. It's one time thing though.

When I recently drove out to Wyoming, my Garmin I was using in my old F150 crapped out and I used the navigation in my iphone. I was surprised when I got a low battery warning using the nav when I had it plugged in and charging the whole time. So, that may be something to consider.

A few on here including myself have the Drift cameras. Personally I don't believe the picture quality is any better, or worse, than the GP despite what the manufacturers and owners say. Having said that, what I prefer about the Drift is that you can mount it at any angle, right side up, upside down, etc etc. The lens rotates on the camera so if your mount is not horizontal, you simply turn the lens so that it is. No shortage of mounting options including using GP mounts if needed. Waterproof (without having to buy a separate case), auto start and stop with 12 volt plug (start the bike and the camera starts recording, stop it and the camera stops), and at the time I bought mine, had the longest lasting rechargeable battery on the market, noticeably longer than the GP. Just a thought. Doug

I haven't looked at them but will do so. It will have to be a pretty good deal though since I can get 40% off a GoPro. The GoPro Silver is waterproof. At least they say 30 minutes at 5 ft. which will be fine for me.

A friend of mine swears by the silver. He has it attached to the top of his helmet every ride. I have never used one.

4K is "nice", but that's it. It's really kinda useless unless you have a serious computer to edit it with...and lots of ram/HD space to store.

 

GP Silver is the best all-around GP there is. It has the best feature set and the built-in monitor is a huge plus. Makes life so easy to see what the heck you are doing while on the road.

 

Plus, I still prefer to shoot 720P for motion video on my JVC and my original GP on the road. Smaller size files than 1080P and virtually no difference in picture quality...unless you are Jeff running a 4K TV. Most of us, even me, are hard pressed to see the difference.

 

My professional thinking is to get the silver and experiment with the settings you like the best.

I have never been a fan of go pro looks , much prefer the look of my garmin . vids are fine for me , my eyes couldn't tell the difference from a good vid and a bad.

i get a little vibration on my vids , but that is caused by the bars , not the mount

I have a hero 2, hero 3+ silver, and the newer entry level hero and my go to is the lesser priced entry level hero. Everytime I use them I wish I had the screen built in because using my phone is just one more step to capture video. As for the 4K editing and storage is a big thing to consider as well as if you plan to upload them they may be downgraded anyway. For 40% off I would grab the GoPro. Look forward to seeing some footage as long as your not teasing us with all that chrome and custom leather work
