It was Joplin Powersports the tire was stuck and on backwards and not mounted to the balance bead or i would have done it myself it also was off a Chinese scooter so don't know if that was a factor because they really didn't Have a thing for the rim

Has anyone tried the American Elite tires? I can buy them locally and I guess they are a dual compound tire, they look and feel similar to the Dunlop E3.

We have a local bike shop that charges $25 a wheel to mount and balance if the wheel is off, regardless of where I purchase them.

Looks like the American Elite is a bit smaller than the Elite 3 otherwise close enough to the same. The Elite 3 comes in two flavours, the MU90B16 - rear one has a deeper tread while the MT90B16 is the same as the American Elite.

I'm pretty sure Dunlop used to provide a front with the deeper tread as well but now they don't list it. I hate marketing ploys like offering a smaller box of cereal for the same price as what they used to carry in a larger size.

Its late here but isn't the diff between an mt90 and an mu90 the width?

Oh and I love my shink o 230 tourmasters on my xj550 but not sure I like the shink o 777's on my '84 VR. I get some snake weave at high speed as the tire does not feel stable (especially with air in front fork). In the tires defense tho, this is my first venture (& first set of tires on it) & I still need to check shock and swing arm mounts. & I've used motorcycle superstore and revzilla for tires.

By tyre feathering , i presume you have raised areas at the edge of the blocks.

if the feathering is on the leading edge, rebound is too slow. if it`s on the trailing edge rebound is too fast

The guy at the bike shop said it was wall height difference. I figure unless I can save a decent chunk I'll go for the E3, or E4 if thats all they have and take it in the size listed as OEM. I might as well use something tried and true rather than something designed specifically for a Harley.

There is a difference in width but there is also a difference in tread depth which relates to wear limits. Both the MU90B16 and the MT90B16 rears fit a 3" rim but the MU90B16 has a wider profile. The wider one probably puts more rubber on the road and fits just fine. It is the one that I have been using. Dunlop used to list two version for the front that also had a difference in tread depth but they seem to have dropped the deeper one.

Dunlop seems to be trying to fix something that isn't broke. :confused07:

Different tires have different tread depths and perhaps larger (wider) tires of the same make/model have proportionally deeper tread depths. MU vs MT is a width difference. Moreover, while there is a range of widths for a particular aspect ratio (90% here), there is an optimum width at particular aspect ratio and at this width, the angle of the sidewall with respect to the contact patch is "reasonable". Folks like to it fat tires on without regard to the sacrifice in handling as that sidewall angle gets ugly.

I'm sure what you say is correct but I have always used the MU90B16 and find the handling perfectly fine. I like the deeper tread because it means longer wear and more miles.

You can certainly choose what you think is best for your bike. Perhaps comparing the specs with the OEM tires might help you make your decision.
