crowrod Posted August 7, 2016 #1 Posted August 7, 2016 Left the house, went up the road got about 3 miles away then it happened .Stopped at a stop sign down shifted into first went to take off ,popped out of gear put it back in took off. shifted into 2nd slight grind,3rd ok 4th loud ratching noise went into 5th same noise contentious shifted back to 3rd rode it home. Does this sound like a trany issue or a linkage problem?

Does this sound like a trany issue or a linkage problem? Did you just do an oil change?
crowrod Posted August 7, 2016 Author #3 Posted August 7, 2016 About a thousand miles ago, used same oil i always use.
camos Posted August 7, 2016 #4 Posted August 7, 2016 Left the house, went up the road got about 3 miles away then it happened .Stopped at a stop sign down shifted into first went to take off ,popped out of gear put it back in took off. shifted into 2nd slight grind,3rd ok 4th loud ratching noise went into 5th same noise contentious shifted back to 3rd rode it home. Does this sound like a trany issue or a linkage problem? Not saying there could not be some serious issue but usually there is some previous indication that something is not working properly. The first thing I would do is put some oil on the shifter joints. When they dry out a positive shift can be difficult if not impossible. Worth checking before tearing expensive stuff apart.
bongobobny Posted August 7, 2016 #5 Posted August 7, 2016 My vote is for shift shaft, shift drum, linkage etc over the gearbox, our transmissions are pretty much bullet proof...
Du-Rron Posted August 7, 2016 #6 Posted August 7, 2016 Check Shift linkage and lubricate all pivot points. I had a ball joint get outta whack and was replaced under warranty. http://v4biker.tumblr.com/post/137722185652/ball-joint-loose Make sure you have no slop and that your movements actually contribute to changing gears. Do you ever use the heel shifter.
crowrod Posted August 8, 2016 Author #7 Posted August 8, 2016 yeah there is a lot of slop there but my pin is not not moving like the one in the video will grease that all up tomorrow ,then if that does not fix problem on to the shift drum linkage!!!!
djh3 Posted August 8, 2016 #8 Posted August 8, 2016 Give a check of the bolts that go thru the hiem joints also. Maybe give them a shot of brake kleen and then lube up.
crowrod Posted August 8, 2016 Author #9 Posted August 8, 2016 Started taking clutch hub off for inspection of shift drum assembly effort stalled do to lack of specialty tool (clutch hub holder) but after removing clutch plates I found this damage (see photo)could that be making al the racket
Marcarl Posted August 8, 2016 #10 Posted August 8, 2016 Don't know why you would want the basket out. What is your issue with the plates?
Marcarl Posted August 8, 2016 #12 Posted August 8, 2016 Yep, seems to be chewed up a little. Better minds than mine will chime in.
Guest Jamsie Posted August 8, 2016 #13 Posted August 8, 2016 it is possible that the clutch plates can hang up and drag while shifting , that could be the cause of the noise when shifting . as you need new plates anyway ( looking at the damage) , replace the plates then go for a test ride , before doing anything else. when trying to identify a problems source only ever change 1 thing at a time and test in between
crowrod Posted August 8, 2016 Author #14 Posted August 8, 2016 Ordered new plates from Sky Doc 17 Will install and go from there
Freebird Posted August 8, 2016 #15 Posted August 8, 2016 If you end up needing to remove the clutch basket, I have the needed tool and like in Oberlin, OH. If you want to pick it up sometime or I can mail it to you. I'm out of town until Friday though.
Guest Jamsie Posted August 8, 2016 #16 Posted August 8, 2016 looking again at the damage on the tabs, i think you should also look for any damage on the basket, any depressions will cause the plates to stick . they need a straight edge to work properly
Du-Rron Posted August 8, 2016 #17 Posted August 8, 2016 Is the clutch basket 'fingers" where the frictions ride smooth?
bongobobny Posted August 9, 2016 #18 Posted August 9, 2016 My question is where are the little bits of broken off metal???
crowrod Posted August 9, 2016 Author #19 Posted August 9, 2016 Thanks Don, ordered one today should have it Wednesday.
crowrod Posted August 9, 2016 Author #20 Posted August 9, 2016 Bongo, as for all those little pieces ,I hope they are stuck to my drain plug!!!!
crowrod Posted August 13, 2016 Author #21 Posted August 13, 2016 Up date, new plates are in,still making noise,. shifts ok ,only makes the noise when not under load . The saga continues. shift shaft assembly suspect !!!!!
videoarizona Posted August 14, 2016 #22 Posted August 14, 2016 ((only makes the noise when not under load )) Hmmm...not to sidetrack the thread, but if this was a 1st gen...I would suspect a broken driveshaft. Mine only whined when not under load....ran great otherwise. Took it all apart and Kevin Campbell @Prairiehammer looked at my pics and found the shaft had broken... There were 2 areas where the shaft could break on a 1st Gen..at the front end at the ujoint and at the rear (mine) where the shaft goes into the final drive. Not saying you may have this problem, but if you can't find any other issues with the clutch, you might start looking elsewhere....just thinking outside the box.
cowpuc Posted August 14, 2016 #23 Posted August 14, 2016 OUCH - that is really not pretty Southbound.. Although NOT on our V-4's, I have had numerous bottom ends apart on scoots thru the years and done LOTS of tranny and clutch work on em and gotta say - that right there is a .. First question,, in the stack of plates I am looking at here - I noticed the first fiber is different than all the rest (looking at the fiber pads). Is this possibly because that plate is the buffer plate that goes in behind the wire at the bottom of the basket or was that a replacement plate someone put in your bike?? I only ask that because if it is a replacement plate and it somehow sized different than the other plates - I wonder if that would cause the fiber plate next to it to notch out on the tabs like it did.. It seems odd to me that the 1st "normal" fiber is the one that took the most beating - the other fibers look ok.. I also noticed that the steel plate between the top fiber with the abnormal looking pads (notice how the pads are rounded?) and the second fiber with the sever notching on the tabs has what appears to be abnormal high spot wear/rub marks on it.. This tells me that something was locking up internally - possibly within the tranny,, probably not rear end related as you would have felt it in the rear wheel assembly - as the inner hub was in the process of being engaged and driven by the outer basket = a "chattering" on the closest disc with the softest material to damage (fibers have aluminum backing for the pads that is used to form the tabs that drive the fibers.. The steel plates that teeth into the hub are steel and therefore harder).. I suppose its possible that you lost the basket bearing on the clutch,, allowing the outer to wobble and cause an angular notching of that plate.. Truly though, I have a strange gut feeling that we are looking at a tranny bearing seizure or some kind of gear related seizure on a shaft somewhere.. I think I would proceed with removing the clutch basket assembly like you are talking about - as you do,, watch very carefully when removing the basket for shims and make sure you see what goes where and in what order behind the basket. Check the shift mechanism behind the basket carefully - might try running it thru the gears while spinning rear wheel and listening/feeling for tightness on the tranny primary as you do.. Ya know,, I really hate to say this but I would probably do some research and see if there is a way to open the tranny up (maybe through an oil pan removal) to at least do a good cleaning even if its not a transmission problem and you dont end up splitting cases to repair the tranny.. Those little pieces of aluminum floating around definitely need to come out - IMHO.. Hope I am totally 100% wrong and its nothing more than a faulty clutch disc or something.. Puc
crowrod Posted August 16, 2016 Author #24 Posted August 16, 2016 I have ordered new pressure plate springs and all shift shaft springs plus a Stopper Lever wont be here till end of the week will report after install.
crowrod Posted August 25, 2016 Author #25 Posted August 25, 2016 I have ordered new pressure plate springs and all shift shaft springs plus a Stopper Lever wont be here till end of the week will report after install. all new parts installed. Runs and shifts, but when I let off the throttle in 4th&5th I get chatter. If I down shift or brake no chatter only when no load.. I'm replacing clutch and drive hub next, maybe hub is in worst shape than I thought it to be!!!
