Du-Rron Posted August 5, 2016 #1 Posted August 5, 2016 It was time to renew my bike insurance. I decided to get a quote from Markel Insurance at http://www.markelinsurance.com/motorcycle I got full coverage insurance for ONE YEAR with an upgrade to liability coverage over Texas minimums and $500 deductible on comp and collision for $173.00 period. I pass this on in the hopes it may save somebody else a buck or two. I have nothing to do with Markel Insurance other than being a new customer of theirs.
bongobobny Posted August 5, 2016 #2 Posted August 5, 2016 Now you're gonna make ALL the Canadians jealous...
mirider Posted August 5, 2016 #3 Posted August 5, 2016 Lucky you don't live in Michigan. You would have to add the MCCA fee of $160.00
Yammer Dan Posted August 5, 2016 #4 Posted August 5, 2016 Uninsured and underinsured not covered??? A waste of money. Make sure you get both of these in writing!! Piece of crap that totaled me had no insurance. I had 300k uninsured til I went to claim. They had a piece of paper with what they claimed were my initals on it that I had turned it down. NOT!! In a hospital bed I couldn't do much at the time. Got screwed again!!!
ReinyRooster Posted August 5, 2016 #5 Posted August 5, 2016 .....that's almost what I pay per month!!!
DblTrbl Posted August 8, 2016 #6 Posted August 8, 2016 I got a quote from Markel for my trike. They were going to give me more coverage than I currently have with Progressive for $200 less. After doing some more research I found that they would insure my trike as a single unit and it would depreciate as time went by. With my current Progressive policy, the trike kit (and everything else not on the bike when it left the factory) is insured as accessories. The accessories are 100% coverage with ZERO depreciation. So, I stayed with Progressive as I thought it would be worth the extra $$ since my accessories are over $25K
Rob Swallows Posted August 8, 2016 #7 Posted August 8, 2016 I have all my, and family's insurances under Geico. There are 13 cars, three bikes, several ATV's and properties under this coverage. My Venture is full gauntlet w/100/300 liability and 50k on medical with an umbrella in force for overages. The cost is $112.62 per year with a Zero deductable comprehensive and $500.00 deductible on collision when broken out. My son's VTX1800 is just a bit more at $115.84 per annum.

I pay $1K/yr for my Venture/Hannigan trike and an 05 VStar 1100. I have no idea what you have to do to get these extremely low rates thru Geico. I have called them several time over the years and requested quotes. They always come in way higher then what I was currently paying. I have a clean driving record. NO accidents or tickets but yet Geico and AAA always come in very high with their quotes. I wouldn't mind it so much if we had a 12 month riding season in the North East but at best it's 6 months. I lower my coverage once I put the bikes up for the winter so I do get a refund which takes some of the sting away.
Rob Swallows Posted August 9, 2016 #9 Posted August 9, 2016 (edited) I don't really know either. I had Shelter ins. for several years when I was younger but they kept jacking their rates terrible so moved to State Farm which ultimately did the same. It is probably due to the number of vehicles of all types under the policy, and good driving records for all. We run about a half dozen comprehensive claims through, (mostly glass) a year but it's never been a problem or affected the rates. I've tried AARP, AA also for quotes and it's not comparable in structure so have stayed with Geico for about nine years now. Probably has something to do with locale also. Du-Rron Posted August 9, 2016 Author #10 Posted August 9, 2016 Has anybody gone to the Markel site I posted above and gotten a free quote for your state and bike? If so, was there any difference?

Probably best to list an automobile in the quote request also as most times bikes are considered "pleasure" or secondary vehicle. I'll try for chits and grins later today just for reference.

saddlebum Posted August 11, 2016 #13 Posted August 11, 2016 This thread makes me sick to my stomach. When I think of what us poor Canucks get raped for when it comes to insurance.

I got a quote from them earlier this year. Compared to my current policy with Progressive, they were about $150/year cheaper for same coverage. Decided to stay with Progressive since I have more flexibility with them. Edited August 11, 2016 by mirider
Air Ready Auto Posted August 12, 2016 #15 Posted August 12, 2016 I have full coverage on the wife's 08 outlook, minimum coverage on my clunker and full coverage on my bike with uninsured/underinsured and renters insurance with Geico. I pay $187 per month for all that. Spotless record and being a vet have their perks.
djh3 Posted August 12, 2016 #16 Posted August 12, 2016 Uninsured cost me more than the rest of the 100/300 policy just about when I had the RSV. With as many illegals as we have hear, I wouldn't drive anything with out uninsured. They buy a 30 day policy, buy a tag and cancel ins.

I had to drop AAA because they said they don't insure motorcycles but that could be Missouri I ended up going with State Farm I got Liability For my Truck Motorcycle and Renters Insurance for 152 a month.. Geico Has always been extremely High for me they were trying to get 358 out of me this last time after I had the policy for 3 months at $134 a month.. sad thing on AAA my Jimmy had broken down so I cancelled my insurance with them I was paying $35 a month for Liability for the Jimmy and when I got the Jimmy going temporarily they wanted $136 a month Because my insurance had lapsed more then 30 days and I ask why would I keep insurance on a vehicle that don't run and told them at that time I had Geico on Both the Rebel and the Venture for $38 a month... They informed me they don't look at 3 yrs of continuous motorcycle insurance the same way they do automobile insurance and that technicallity is what was gonna cause my insurance to go thru the roof with Geico so I switched to state farm..
DblTrbl Posted August 12, 2016 #19 Posted August 12, 2016 Funny thing is New Hampshire, the "Live Free or Die" state does not require insurance. If you do choose to purchase insurance, you pay thru the nose because the state has "special requirements" which the insurance companies take advantage of and jack up the cost. Several years ago a bought a house about 5 miles from the apartment I was renting. My insurance went up $30.... I called and asked why? They said there was more crime in my new area....WHAT?? I moved to a rural area which has virtually zero crime. It's all a scam.....we are damned if we do, damned if we don't when it comes to getting insurance.

Prairiehammer Posted May 26, 2017 #21 Posted May 26, 2017 My Progressive policy is about to expire and then I receive a mailing from Markel Insurance. Out of curiosity, I went to their site and ran a quote. For identical coverage, Markel's premium is $160 annually versus $490 for Progressive.
