Cowboy Posted August 3, 2016 #1 Posted August 3, 2016 Anyone have a Show Chrome Digital 5 Function Volt Meter installed. I ran the wires last night and hooked it up as per installation instructions. Red wire to constant positive 12 Volt source. Black to ground on the frame. Orange to a 12 Volt source that is on thru the Acc. Switch. Question does the clock, volts & temp stay on all the time? One would think that after time this would draw the battery down! Brian
sldunker Posted August 3, 2016 #2 Posted August 3, 2016 Just looked at reviews of this item on Dennis Kirk site. One guy had this hooked up on bike for 2 months without starting and it was still showing over 12 volts. You should be OK. Looks like it has a low draw.
Flyinfool Posted August 3, 2016 #3 Posted August 3, 2016 Since it uses an always hot wire to maintain time when the key is off and a separate switched power wire, My guess is that it should turn off. But on the other hand I am betting that it does not draw enough power to really matter. Take your Multi meter and measure the amp draw with the bike turned off. It is then simple math to see how long it would take to drain the battery. I used to have a similar one that used a single AA battery that lasted a year of it being on 24/7. Your bike battery has a lot more power than a AA.
garyS-NJ Posted August 3, 2016 #4 Posted August 3, 2016 I've never seen that item but would think the constant current draw would be speced. Side note, I've seen Ebay micro volt and amp meters that would be cool to run with aux lights if you're marginal (but probably won't measure milliamps well). My old Honda with aux hids was marginal as I watched a volunteer. Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
Cowboy Posted August 6, 2016 Author #5 Posted August 6, 2016 Installed! Also Installed a smaller VOLT METER ! Problem found both meters tell me that at idle I am charging 12.5, OK! But when I raise the RPM's it will go as far as 17.1! Not Good this will boil the battery for sure. Any sugguestions for a replacement Rectifier/Regulator OEM Cycle has the Rectifier & Regulator Assy 4XY-81960-00-00 for $70.20 Would like a better option than the OEM part. Possible Heavier Duty? Part numbers and Manufacturer or Seller would be appreciated. Thank Brian
Flyinfool Posted August 6, 2016 #6 Posted August 6, 2016 Yup 17 is to high, Sorry I can't help with parts recomendations for a 2nd gen.
sldunker Posted August 6, 2016 #7 Posted August 6, 2016 I am not sure how accurate these cheap volt meters are. They may just give you a general idea of what is going on for voltage. If battery shows no indication of overcharging I would check it with a good quality meter. A overcharging AGM battery would get really hot, if it is a acid battery you would see acid boil over on battery.
bongobobny Posted August 6, 2016 #8 Posted August 6, 2016 There are better than stock R/R's out there such as the Shindigen (sp) but there is no "plug and play" except for the Rick's R/R, they all use different connectors! i talked with our resident wiring adapter guru M61A1Mech and Steve can not find a source for the Yamaha R/R connector so you have to hack up the harness...
