You trade your beard for the outfit or you trying to run incogneato for a coming up border crossing while headed for that NY rally coming up GREAT FIND BROTHER!! Beard not me..., don't want to copy the Pucster ! Now that is some nice Leather apparel!!! Love the classic stuff! Where did you happen to stubble upon that? Or was it already hiding in your closet? While talking to some friends we got onto the subject of motorcycles (go figure) and she started talking about her grandfather, (she is in her 70's) riding motorcycles back when he served during WWI and WWII , she continued to tell me how he rode year around until a few years before he died in the early 60's. She has had these items ever since then, stored away and only taken out to show, clean and feed the leather! I gotta tell ya, it's all in excellent condition except for a few places where the thread has come loose. She then asked if I'd like to see them,,,, HELL yes I would! Today she brought them to my work to let me have a look, as she pulled out one item after another , me putting them on just as quickly, with a childish grin on my face , them looking and laughing, she said, if you want this stuff you can have it! Saying they were tired of moving it around. After about 10 hugs and twice as many THANK YOU'S I said to them I have something I'd like to give you in return. About 20 years ago I acquired some tools that I think Mike (Her Husband) would love to have. I had a complete set of Coopers tools from the late 1800's , everything needed to make Oak whisky barrels. Mike being a carpenter and already having a pretty nice collection of antique planes, I figured these would compliment his collection. We all walked away happy To top all this off they are going to bring me photos of grandpa wearing all this gear sitting on his Indian motorcycle. Can't wait to see those! It was hiding waaaaay back in the closet in a trunk. He bought it new. :moon::moon::moon::moon:
ragtop69gs Posted August 2, 2016 Author #6 Posted August 2, 2016 Here is a link to the story of Buco Leather. http://vintageleatherjackets.blogspot.com/2013/12/the-origins-of-buco.html
VanRiver Posted August 2, 2016 #7 Posted August 2, 2016 A Fantastic story like that which goes along with the leathers really makes them SPECIAL!!!!! So glad they were passed on to you and a good home. If you get the pictures of "Grand Dad" please share them if you can! I would love to see the original owner using them for what they were made for. Back when "Men were Men" and "Motorcycles were Motorcycles"! If those leathers could talk, that would be a tail worth listening too. While talking to some friends we got onto the subject of motorcycles (go figure) and she started talking about her grandfather, (she is in her 70's) riding motorcycles back when he served during WWI and WWII , she continued to tell me how he rode year around until a few years before he died in the early 60's. VanRiver Posted August 2, 2016 #9 Posted August 2, 2016 Wow I learned something tonight.....Those Buco Jackets are worth a Pretty Penny (I know yours is priceless based on how you came to owning it). Looks like those Buco's are currently going for $1,000 to $3,000 range on eBay, and they are not even close to being as nice as the one you have. Here is one that appears to be similar to yours in design but was made by Buco for Sears in the 1950's. Guy wants $2300 for it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1950s-VINTAGE-D-POCKET-STEERHIDE-MOTORCYCLE-JACKET-ROCKABILLY-HOTROD-CAR-CLUB-/301896822895?hash=item464a73f06f:g:tzMAAOxyOalTbE2Z Might want to get some extra house insurance to cover your new Vintage leathers!
ragtop69gs Posted August 2, 2016 Author #10 Posted August 2, 2016 Thanks for that link but, NOT FOR SALE ! I will have the little bit of loose stitching repaired and this gear will be worn occasionally during special bike events. Almost makes me want to go out and find a period correct bike on which to wear this stuff. Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
VanRiver Posted August 2, 2016 #11 Posted August 2, 2016 I LIKE how you think @ragtop69gs !!! Those leathers are the perfect reason to start hunting for a period correct Indian Chief to add to your motorcycle collection! That would look so snazzy! What year Indian would you get (if you could get one that is).....here is a beautiful example of a 1944, might be too "new" to match the leathers though.

cowpuc Posted August 3, 2016 #14 Posted August 3, 2016 TOTALLY 100% awesome and GORGEOUS RAGGY!! Just thought of something = take chapstick, run it down the zippers on your awesome find - up n down a few times with the zips and they will work like brand new if they dont now.. I also have found that a quick pass on the chapstick smear with a lighter helps to but do it quick and not to close to any fabric.. ,, still got the WW2 Goggles that came with Olivia the War Bike, will have to make sure you and I wear our very special goggles next time we meet for Hot Dogs = we will be the best dressed bikers in America running around with our goggles snapped on our foreheads = twins even if ya grow your beard back :backinmyday:
cowpuc Posted August 3, 2016 #15 Posted August 3, 2016 No idea on the HD Jacket but WOWZY is that AWESOME in its own right.. Gonna go peek in my HD History book and see if I notice it on one of the riders in there. Will be back.......
ragtop69gs Posted August 3, 2016 Author #16 Posted August 3, 2016 (edited) No idea on the HD Jacket but WOWZY is that AWESOME in its own right.. Gonna go peek in my HD History book and see if I notice it on one of the riders in there. Will be back....... The J22 jacket has stiff zippers, gotta find how to clean them up without damage to the leather or liner before lubing them up. The goggles I got with this stuff Has the Brand "Rocket" stamped in them, I have to wonder if it's the same Rocket company that's in business today? cowpuc Posted August 3, 2016 #17 Posted August 3, 2016 Dealt with something similar a while back Raggy, hit the zips with some compressed air to clean em up - then used chap stick and a quick warm up with a lighter - worked like new and still does...
bongobobny Posted August 3, 2016 #18 Posted August 3, 2016 Good idea Puc! I imagine, though, Johnson's floor wax, bee's wax, canning wax, etc would work as well!! Jay, you trying for the "Baron Von Zipper" look??
