It's not THAT bad!! First thing you need is a trunk rack from an '85 only!!! Otherwise you need to get a trunk rack from a MK2 and also the rear subframe from a MK2. You will also need the antenna mount from an '85 on up! If you find an '85 trunk rack (what the trunk mounts to) you can use your '83 trunk mounting hardware on the MK2 trunk, or get a trunk from an '85, and it will still be removable! If you go the route of swapping the MK2 rear subframe then you can also mount the larger MK2 saddlebags if you want even more room!! Of course you will also want to (actually need to) use the MK2 rear fender and lighting...

The MK2 trunk rack can be made to fit the MK1 but you need to saw off the two down arms so you won't need to use the MK2 subframe. Regardless you WILL need the longer antenna mount...

Never did it but I was always under the impression that it was very doable but you had to swap out the whole rear "subframe" as the mounts are all different.. I was recently told by a friend who was working on his MK2's drive shaft/swing arm assembly that the MK1's assembly is considerably shorter too (like by a couple inches). From that I would surmise that dropping the MK2 bags and subframe would be easier cause you would just have some xtra overhang BUT - if you were going the other way around - putting a MK1 setup on a MK2 - thinking you might run into clearance issues.

Another interesting point in all that is - if Mom Yam did extend the wheel base by a couple inches by lengthening the swing arm,, what affect in handling did it have and on and on...

Added info on the trunk mounting rack. The '83 and '84 are the same. For the '85 they added some extra pieces for the helmet locks and bigger trunk. On the MK2, they also added two down arms to the '85 style for a more solid mount. regardless, the base rack is the same animal for all years..
