jfman Posted July 24, 2016 #1 Posted July 24, 2016 I was about to throw some Barnett springs in my newly purchased Venture but when I pulled the cover I saw something quite odd. there is an external pusher plate on top of the oem clutch basket. It sort of looks like its aftermarket. what is this? Should I stick with this and forgo the barnett springs?
ChurchBuilder Posted July 24, 2016 #2 Posted July 24, 2016 That is the type of setup that is on my Vmax. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
jfman Posted July 24, 2016 Author #3 Posted July 24, 2016 That is the type of setup that is on my Vmax. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk is this OEM? My other 1985 Venture did not have this setup?!?
ChurchBuilder Posted July 24, 2016 #4 Posted July 24, 2016 My 84 Venture has springs and bolts, not the same Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
ChurchBuilder Posted July 24, 2016 #5 Posted July 24, 2016 Not OEM for the Venture but it is OEM for the Vmax Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
jfman Posted July 24, 2016 Author #6 Posted July 24, 2016 And there are no springs at all in there!!! Well crap.... does that mean my bike nay have a vmax motor?!? How can I tell?
ChurchBuilder Posted July 24, 2016 #7 Posted July 24, 2016 Most Vmax motors are black. There are many, many interchangeable parts though. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
ChurchBuilder Posted July 24, 2016 #8 Posted July 24, 2016 The spring is different. It's the black disk from your first picture. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
jfman Posted July 24, 2016 Author #9 Posted July 24, 2016 Is it good or bad that I have a vmax clutch setup?!
ChurchBuilder Posted July 24, 2016 #10 Posted July 24, 2016 Yamaha changed the venture clutches to that type in 1987 so that must be the better clutch Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
gaj1917 Posted July 24, 2016 #11 Posted July 24, 2016 Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this type of clutch setup began to appear in Ventures from 86 or 87 onward.
ChurchBuilder Posted July 24, 2016 #12 Posted July 24, 2016 That is correct Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
gaj1917 Posted July 24, 2016 #13 Posted July 24, 2016 So jfman, looks like previous owner slapped a newer style clutch in your '85. Good or bad? You'll get differing opinions on that. How it works depends on the condition of the discs and the steel spring band. The discs you can easily replace with a Barnett kit.

Well mystery solved.... as I was reinstalling the clutch cover a detail caught my eye. The cover says "1300" on it. So I guess somewhere along the road, my motor has been swapped for a 1300 motor. Now I understand why the bike came with so many spares I got with it spare water pump, spare fuel pump, spacer coils, spare rr, spare stator etc... Edited July 24, 2016 by jfman
Freebird Posted July 24, 2016 #15 Posted July 24, 2016 Just check the serial number on the motor. That will tell you all there is to know. If it is indeed a 1300, you got lucky. You don't have to worry about 2nd gear.

You don't have to worry about 2nd gear. Definitely check serial number and date of manufacture. In order to install the new style clutch, someone would have to have installed the 1300 cover - a 1200 won't fit the larger clutch. So, you still may have an 85 bike.
cimmer Posted July 26, 2016 #17 Posted July 26, 2016 When you reinstall that clutch, make sure you line the disk up correctly as from looking at the picture the previous owner didnt have it correct. Make sure the notches in the disk match up with the basket. The outer disk is in the correct spot the others arent. Rick F.
