LukeMacPU Posted July 27, 2016 #26 Posted July 27, 2016 (edited) I've read how premium isn't worth it in lots of articles lately. That may be true for most vehicles. Higher octane fuel essentially has a higher ignition point and is suitable for higher compression engines and such. Most of the time not a requirement or benefit in many engines. Have found by experiment that my bike stutters (likely pre-ignition) if I get regular unleaded sometimes. Recently had my side cover off (and cleaned it) and read where it called for high octane fuel to be used in my '83 on the factory sticker. I'll stick with the "good" stuff to avoid knocking/pinging. Only in the bike though, doesn't seem to help (and shouldn't) my truck/van/mowers. My thumbs did this on a tiny keyboard so cut me some slack!, Edited August 4, 2016 by LukeMacPU
Pegasus1300 Posted August 4, 2016 #27 Posted August 4, 2016 There is the shotgun method. I'm sure Yammer Dan knows what he is talking about but Berryman's scares me because it has acetone in it according to the label. Acetone will dissolve almost anything. So, if there is any chance of it getting to something other than metal, it might dissolve it. The Berryman's B 12 liquid and spray was the preferred method of the old Venture Touring Society and was featured ib several of their old Bench Wrench articles in the house organ. I am sure those articles are still in the tech section of the MTS the successor. I used this method myself for years whenever my Venture plugged up. Take the top off the air cleaner Spray into every hole you can find while engine is running. You may need someone to help you keep it running. Also be sure to put the mixture Dan suggested in the above post. It may take a little time but this will clean out the carbs and I never had it hurt anything.
dna9656 Posted August 4, 2016 #28 Posted August 4, 2016 Be careful of berryman's full strength. It has been known to EAT the floats....Feed ME, Feed ME, FEED ME!
dna9656 Posted August 4, 2016 #29 Posted August 4, 2016 Premium fuel has more anti knock properties, NO more energy that regular; it is formulated to NOT prematurely burn (due to higher compression) than regular gas. So buying it for an engine with less than HIGH compression is a waste of money.
paysaw Posted August 4, 2016 #30 Posted August 4, 2016 I think you have fuel circuit problems. If the carbs were not maintained, or fuel additives added i think you have nasty build up in the circuits. My money is to pull carbs and rebuild. A better result.Adding the choke only enriches the fuel mixture,If you are maxed out and can only run in that position, it could be a fuel flow problem. Good luck.
