Tried starting my '89 Venture today. It wouldn't fire until I sprayed some starting fluid. It's not out of gas as it has 1 bar left. I hear the fuel pump when I turn the key on. Have many of you had to replace your fuel lines? (For the record I run premium and no gasohol.)

if you can hear the pump that to me is an indication its not priming, or not getting fuel. because the petcock is on the opposite side as the kick stand it will fuel starve on the kick stand with fuel still indicated even with it on reserve. you should toss a gallon or two in and see where you get. if you don't hear the pump load up and stop after turning the key two or three times fuel is not making it to the pump and is either a clogged fuel filter (located under the tank between above the swing arm pivot) or the petcock itself is clogged up. its pretty rare for the lines themselves to be the issue.

I did not run into this problem with my Yamaha yet, however I had a Victory V92C it started at high throttle setting it would cut out, then later on ran like crap. The fuel line had gone bad and was clasping under pressure. Really under suction, the first mistake I made I went to NAPA and bought some fuel line that was close to the size, but I didn't realize that it was not rated for the amount of suction that my bike fuel pump had. Victory recommended I go to a marine boat dealer and get fuel line there. I did and it worked great.

yes typically the first key turn after the bike has been off for a while you will hear it kick in and load up, but if it is still running the second or third time the pump is not getting up to pressure.

Yes the pump has quieted down now. Remembered I had shut off the fuel last fall and ran the carbs dry. I usually don't do that since I always run Stabil in my tank the last few rides of the season. Probably won't do it again either!

After synching the carbs and putting new synch port caps on the bike is running out well. I was surprised by how the carbs get out of synch just sitting in the storage shed for 7 months!
